Another Blowout

It was only a matter of time till it happened to me I said. Blew out a greenball st235r16 almost new tire.Broke the galley pull rod, wiped out the side plastic fender and all the black stuff above the tire and tore the brake wires when it wraped around the axles. I am going to the G rated tire. I have had nothing but tire issues since I got this 3400 in 2007. Tread seperation and breakdown but this is the first blowout. This gets expensive. Now I have to buy all new tires to match because of the Highth of the G614.

Ouch!, that hurts. I wonder why some people have a lot of problems and others don't. I had Mission tires on our rig and had over 20,000 miles on them with never a problem. I would think it would either have to be the weight of the rig, the speed that one is traveling or the amount of air pressure in the tires along with heat or a combination of all (unless you hit a curb or a pot hole). It can't be just random that one rig has several problems and another has none.

Don't forget about the spare when changing the tire size and rating.

I would suppose the Chinese might accidentally produce a good batch every now and then. I know I was very meticulous in caring for the tires. Checked pressure and temperature often, all to no avail. I've never looked at a particular area of the country, as far as heat is concerned. I think I solved the problem with USA made LTs.

Its too bad Montana doesn't get the hint and put better tires on their trailers. Most of us would probably be willing to pay a little more to have better tires installed at the factory. This is totally unacceptable for the crap they put on our trailers. Some of these tires are only lasting several thousand mile, blowing and doing major damage. You should not have to replace these tires so soon. I've got the Chinese Goodyear Marathon tires on my new 3000RK I bought 3 weeks ago and already unsure of any long distant trips without a blowout.

If you are concerned about money and want to save a bit, get E rated LT tires. They have the capacity for 6k axles and are made in the USA. No doubt the G614s are probably the best tire out there...but IMHO, a bit of an over kill. I put the same Bridgestones (Duravas 500s) our tire expert Lonnie B has on his Montana, I figure that should work fine, and has so far.

Those Bridgestone Duravas 500's look like nice tires. A bit cheaper than the Goodyears.

It is not just he Montana's that have the china bombs on them. I just purchasedthe new Keystone Alpine 3500RE and it came with the Power King china bombs. First trip to Myrtle Beach 2 weeks ago I changed them out for G614's. I feel alot safer now.

Just FYI. There is a SOB next to us at the repair shop we're at, a 40 foot 5er and it has "Load Boss" tires on it. They're a Freestar load range G and made in China. This is a High Line trailer that has the hydraulic disc brakes and many upgrades and then these junk tires.

Yet we put 10K plus on our Mission tires without Problem and they are still turning on a boat trailer.. I know Dave Sprik still has the OEM Missions on his 07 3400 with plenty of miles on them. I don't get it??????

I never blew out a Mission tire. But the steel belts fractured and came through the tread so Tireco replaced them all with Freestar tires at no cost to me other than I paid mounting and balancing. Those were actually heavier tires, higher rated, than the Missions. Yet we blew one in January. Minimal body damage, but some.

Then in April, this...

and this...

convinced us to spend the $1334.xx (total) for five new Goodyear G614 load range G tires. We've only done 45 miles since installing those tires but I'm hoping our tire problems are now history. $2081.xx in body damage (parts and labor) including a new rim but not tires.

I've not chimed in for quite some time but I want to share that I lost two Marathons on the driver's side less than 200 miles apart. Lost the leading tire, tread just separated and wrapped around the axel in addition to damaging the belly and exterior sheet metal. I saw the tire blow in the mirror and stopped before the TPM even alarmed. Installed the spare which was 20 lbs low but inflated it immediately. The trailing tire also lost the tread and did additional damage to the exterior. Fortunately, I stopped by the nearest tire dealer and bought a replacement tire between blowouts. You never know when your luck is running against you, especially Friday the 13th. Makes me wonder about the quality of Marathons, these have less then 3000 miles on them.

I haven't had any blowouts with my Montana fifth wheel, but I had three with my Terry in one year. I had Cooper Tires at the time that happen. I am enjoying my new fifth wheel.

John-- We'll keep our fingers crossed for you but if you have Marathons on you had better be looking for a new set real quickly -- unless your unit is parked in a campground and doesn't move! They are just ticking time bombs!

One significant variance that applies to tire loading is the amount of water we carry
on 2009 and newer Montanas, fresh, grey and waste tanks can add up to ~1700 lb. if full
~1500 lb. on older Montanas
slide rooms can add ~500-1000 lb.@
and what's in your basement? lawn chairs??... or enough tools, jacks and fluids to overhaul the TV and change all the blown out tires on the trailer?
... and if you're from down here, maybe even a 20 gallon cast iron jambalaya pot!... not me,,.. i'm just sayin'

Yeh John I agree with Ron and Jim, Better get the 10 plies off and go with some 14 plies!
14's are an available option on the 2012 3665RE,.. looks like that might be as close as Keystone gets to acknowledging under-rated tires

We were polled at the fall rally a couple of years ago if we were willing to pay more for the G614 tires. As i recall the general feeling was it was too much money. As far as I can tell the price for the G614's installed OEM on the big sky are @1100.00.I would NOT purchase one of the heavier Montana's without the better tires considering how we use the rig.It was one of the determining factors in the purchae of the big sky.
