A new toy....

Well, after much shopping, buying, waiting and hauling I now have an 04 2955 attached to my truck in front of the house. Truth be told, we're heading out tomorrow and I'm too scared to try and back the thing into my skinny RV strip just yet. I need a few more days of experience before I try it. I've towed a lot of TT but this is my first 5th wheel.

Overall, I'm happier than I could have imagined with the new rig. Towing a 5th is a dream compared to a TT. Also upgrading to a Duramax from a 1/2 ton doesn't hurt either. It's a whole different world.

With any luck I'll check back in tomorrow night from the Oregon coast which is about a two hour drive from here. Ironically, I bought the 5th wheel about half way there and had to drive it home tonight to load up all our stuff just to head right back past the dealership.

Thanks everyone for all of the great info around here... I haven't had to ask too many questions since it seems everything I've wondered comes up instantly on a search.

In any case, I'm sure I'll be hanging around here from time to time...

happy camping

Matt

Welcome to the forum. The fifth wheel should be easier to back in, but a little practice never hurt. Glad you found the forum to go along with your Monty.

I am told that the tt is easier to maneuver when backing, because the pivot point is located in a place where the tow vehicle has more 'influence'. The trailer responds quicker and more sharply. The 5er requires a more dramatic turn of the wheel. I've done both, and think that they are equally easy or difficult at first. The doing of it brings the expertise in either. But isn't it fun to be excited about something at this age?

Congrats Matt, we can feel your excitement. Our previous Monty was an 03/2955 and that is a great and popular floorplan indeed. Enjoy!

Pretty exciting stuff! I remember our excitement when we got our Montana. We love it more today than we did in the beginning!

We hope you're going to love your new toy.

Welcome to the MOC forum. We have had TTs too and the 5th wheel definitely seems easier to back up accurately than the TTs did. Now is the time to enjoy!

congrats on the 5th wheel. When my husband and I first bought our Montana we were afraid to back it up to. Before the 5th wheel we had a 78 silver streak TT, John could back that one up good. When ever we would go out in the Montana we'd always ask for a pull through and a big one to boot. Now doing much better I can even back it up. Good luck and have a safe trip.

Thanks everyone!! We're doing pretty good. I'm sitting in the KOA at Lincoln City Oregon watching TV and enjoynig the new Monty. We had a couple of hickups yesterday but overall everything is going great.

As for backing up.... my first chance came after pulling into a service station only to find out their cover was only 11 feet. Oops! Well, I had to learn sometime. Luckily for a $5 tip/bribe the attendant stopped traffic on the highway (a busy one) so I could back out. Nothing like learning under pressure

Overall, this thing is as easy or easier to back up than the TT. The Duramax-5th combo is a whole different world than the 1/2 ton-TT setup.

Thanks again!!

Hope you enjoy your 2955 as much as we have enjoyed ours. We can go to just about any of the Oregon State Parks and have no problem finding a spot for the rig. We spend a lot of time in state, federal, and county parks in Oregon.
