Cape Hatteras KOA

Arrived today, in site 309, very close to the water. Come on by if you are in the area, maybe call first, 916-710-1974. Going to get some crabs tomorrow from "Dirty Dick's"!!!! DW wants to try parasailing or kayaking. I'm up for those.

Hello Exav8tr,

Hatteras is a fine place to be!!! We used to go every October to surf fish.I can recommend several restaurants. In the Buxton area the Quarterdeck is good, the sauted lump backfin crab meat in butter is great,it's a speciality all over the island. Also Billy's fish house. Can't forget Bubba's BBQ for lunch. In Hatteras village if it's still there try the Channel Bass restaurant and Sonny's seafood, there's more but I'm drawing a blank right now.The ferry ride to Ocrakoke Island used to be free, not sure about now.

Dillons Corner & The Red Drum tackle shop in Buxton will custom make a surf rod for you in less than 24 hrs.,just pick out the blank you want.Surf fishing by the lighthouse is normally good, also Cape Point. You might have to bag your tires down to about 25 lbs for beach driving.Check out all the 4x4 rigs with the rod racks on the front...pretty cool eh.I think the lighthouse is open...the view from the top is awesome, have a great time.

The ferry to Ocrakoke is free. Do try the parasailing, you won't be sorry. It's a kick. Don't miss Kitty Hawk. You can also take a plane ride around Kitty Hawk and the Bodie Point lighthouse. You can see shipwrecks in the water from the air. You might even be able to see them when you are parasailing.

Well, we did Kitty Hawk today, being a pilot I was thrilled to be where it all started. We've come a long way baby!!! We did the lighthouse on Bodie Island and got crabs (actually shrimp and scallops) from Dirty Dicks. Very pricey place but good food, DW had a great salad with sugared pecans and a berry vinagrette. Couldn't get her to buy a T-shirt though. Funny thing; There is a saloon/restaurant between Anchorage and Fairbanks, It's called "Skinny Dicks, Half Way Inn", I asked if they were any relation and the answer was no.

Tomorrow we will do the Cape, the Ferry, (still free), and Ocracoke Island. Will keep the restaurants in mind. We will be here until Tuesday, then move north. We did meet a MOC'er today and will talk more this weekend. He is from Raleigh and has been a member for some time, just can't remember his user name. First name was Bill

Phil,
If you see this before Ocracoke, stop at Howard's Pub for a good burger and a beer (115 to choose from). Neat place as you come into town on the right.

Chris, We ALMOST stopped there today but we had the dog with us and didn't want to leave him in the truck. We stopped at Jasons and got a sub and a salad and went for a picnic table with the dog. Ocracoke is very unique. We drove around, checked out the light house and the harbor area, then got the ferry back to Hatteras, took a nap and are going to see "The Lost Colony" tonight. Tomorrow will be a day at the beach, for sure!!!!!!! Then lunch at Quarterdeck. WHEW! I'm getting tired with all this sightseeing!!!!!!!

We really enjoy everyones input and thank you very much for your ideas, Please keep them coming....

You need to try Owens in Nags Head. The food is great and you get great service. They are pricey, but it was worth it.
