Fresh Water Pump Replacement
Had to replace the Fresh Water Pump on my 2007 3440RL 5th wheel. Problem is the new pump is sucking a lot of air from the holding tank. Pump is self priming type. I don’t get it. Any thoughts on the subject?

Non self priming pumps are a major pain and only meant to be used where pump is lower than the water tank feed line. Obviously not meant for typical fifth wheel environment and I would suggest you buy a good quality self priming pump, if you really want to use water from the tank.

You probably have an air leak somewhere you hooked it up. Air is much lighter than water so a pump would much rather pump air than water. Go look for an air leak. It probably is on a fitting you removed but may be in one that just got moved.

Thanks. I thought that too, but when I turn on the parks water thereby pressurizing the system I see no leaks. Wouldn’t an air leak produce a water leak. What scares me is the way Keystone designed th plumbing around the water pump with all the bypasses, drains, fills and winterizing valves. I plumbed the new pump in the same location as the old one. This is crazy.

No it wouldn't. The pump should have a check valve. You have a loose connection on the suction side of the pump. Check any connection on that side and also the connections that are related such as the connection to the tank fill valve.

That is a great step 1. Step 2, is there water in the tank. (Story to sound sarcastic but most times it is the simplest of things).

Sorry that I read your post as non self priming. If the pump you put in has a mesh filter attached, you want to make sure the o ring is installed and filter hand tight. If the pump has push in fittings that latch when pushed in, make sure that they are latched. As people have said, it is the pump inlet that will be causing the issue. If screw in fittings, it may be that the inlet one has a defective thread allowing air in.
