Question: Hydraulic popping & adding jack oil

I did what Lippert suggests in adding the jack oil into the reservoir.
My question is: How many of you that did this had to a second quart as Lippert suggests, if the popping didn't quit?

I'm curious what my chances of success are with the one single quart.
Thanks!

My popping stopped over time without putting anything in. Had a jack replaced and it started again and once again stopped with time. My guess is you'll have to let that quart cycle thru and the air cycle out.

I added 1 quart of the Cat Hydraulic fluid recommended by Lippert. It made a major improvement. I rarely have popping now. But I am thinking of adding another quart. The old "If one is good, then two are better" philosophy.

After adding per the lippert manual two years ago when we bought the rig, have had no noise or issues.

As a Caterpillar retiree, we appreciate the business. I have not had the popping with our Level Up. I guess I should get a quart of Caterpillar fluid.

Send a message via AIM to stengels
We used the fork oil and it basically resolved the problem once it ran through the system.

The lead installation instructor/certifier for Lippert 6 point level-up systems told me that the popping is simply air in the system. He also told me that any aftermarket installs that Lippert does includes the hydraulic fluid additive.

Mark N., Hope you actually put in fork oil, not jack oil as you stated, because jack oil will do nothing to fix the stiction issue in the hydraulic system, which is what causes the popping with the jacks, and no, it is not air in the hydraulics that causes this, or it would soon disappear with continued use as the air was worked out of the lines. I used the CAT fluid, and the popping stopped almost immediately after installing the quart of fluid.

I used 1 quart of fork oil and the popping decreased but did not stop. Finally got around a Cat dealer for the second quart and the popping ceased immediately after addition. If you use Cat oil in the first place you might not need the second.

Wonder if the CAT Oil being designed for Heavy Duty Hydraulic Systems is better than Motorcycle Fork Oil? Sure sounds like it.

Around my area they use the Torco RFF 15wt fork oil just because it's readily available. It seemingly works as I have a couple of RV tech friends that haven't said any different. I imagine any of the recommendations work as long as you follow the instructions. There's more to it than just sucking out a quart and replacing it if you want quicker results. http://www.lci1.com/images/support/lipsheet/0295.pdf

Is there a drain for the reservoir? If not, what did you use to get the oil out and how did you manage to get 2 quarts?

turkey baster

I used a turkey baster that i found at a garage sale for $1 (did not use DW's turkey baster!)...just slow and steady...suck it in and squeeze it out into an empty transmission fluid bottle. Now I use that bottle to soak on a rag to wipe off landing gear legs.

The key on what fluid to add is.... what does your reservoir currently have in it?

Some have ATF fluid and some cone with AW32 ....

Easiest way to tell is if fluid is honey colored you have AW32 in the reservoir.

The Lippert PDFs and are in desperate need of revision to reflect this....

Mixing AW32 with ATF is not good for all the internal seals.

Mine came from factory with AW32 fluid. That’s what I have serviced it with. I drain out as much as I can from reservoir every 3 years without inducing air into system and reservice with AW32.
