Bryce Canyon KOA

Has anyone stayed at the KOA near Bryce Canyon? Also, if we used that as a base, could we also get to Zion, Capitol Reef and other sights in the area. We'll be there mid-May.

Ron,
I would recommend the campground at Ruby's Inn, right at the entrance to the park. Invaluable if you want to get pictures at various times of day. You could do Zion from there but one day doesn't do it justice. I don't know how much snow they got this winter but Capitol Reef may not be open by then

This may be of no help directly to you, but we've stayed in almost 50 different KOA's in the past 7 years. We like them. We compare them to eating at a restaurant. McDonald's restaurants are by no means gourmet restaurants, but anywhere you go you know what's on the menu and what the food will taste like. KOA's are much the same way, they aren't RV resorts, but they offer a class of amenities which we find necessary, and we know that reserving and pulling into one.

Nevertheless, we're leaving for Zion in a week and will be staying in an RV resort in Springdale, but will get up well before dawn one day to drive over to Bryce to photograph the sunrise, which is supposed to be gorgeous. We've been to both parks several times, but prefer Zion.

Ruby's worked fine for us too.

Zion does deserve more than a day, and we hope to give it day 2 to day ??? some time in the future. If you only have the day, that drive from the east to the west thru the tunnel was to die for! YUMMY.

We also did a day trip via Escalante to Capital Reef. DANG, that was ONE long day, GROANNNNN. Close to 13 or 14 hours. Only 1.5 hours in the park, I wanted another 2 to ???? days. FAB!!!

We left Bryce area about May 14th or so. We had no trouble getting into Capital or Zion, but, got snowed OUT of Bryce at least 2 days in a row with snow. Depending on Momma Nature, it can be coolish and snowy just about any day of they year. You can watch a storm roll in on my blog. It was totally awesome!!

And, here, you can see Ruby's in a snowstorm, most snow we camped in in a VERY long time! LOL

We stayed at Bryce Canyon KOA last May and it is about 15 miles down hill from the park entrance. Set my milage gauge at the top and got 44 miles per gallon in Tow/Haul coasting down the "dump". The people were very nice and helpful. It would be a significant drive from Bryce down to Zion. We stayed in Kanab, UT when we visited Zion. We were parked in a dusty hillside area of the Bryce Canyon KOA and had to clean the fine particals of red dirt out of the Monty for a long time. I recommend staying at Ruby's Inn RV park right at the entrance to the park. We did a day trip over to Capitol Reef from Bryce not towing across St. Hwy. 12 then on to the Reef. There are many hair raising drop offs and in one area they are on both sides at the same time. We did a pick-a-nic under a beautiful Cottonwood at Fruita.

We like Ruby's very much. We have been to Zion several time, but the last time we stayed at Ruby's we drove over to Zion and went through the back gate and drove through the tunnel to the main entrance.
We had time to ride the tram through the park and have lunch at the Lodge before driving back to Ruby's in the late afternoon.

We too also stayed at Ruby's, loved the convenience. The bus that you can take to Bryce is right outside of the campground and runs quite often. We did a day trip to Canyonlands while there. In Zion we stayed within the park, water & electric only, but again we could go back n forth all different times of the day.

Enjoy!!!!!

We are at the Cannonville/Bryce Valley KOA right now. It is a nice park and as stated only 15 miles from Bryce Canyon NP. We drove UT-12 from Torrey to Cannonville yesterday ad it took about three hours for the 100 mile drive. Several 14% grades. Definitely hair-raising. Beautiful drive though (according to the DW). I was focused on the road. The roads are clear on UT-12 from end to end. There are a few camping sites that will accommodate a large 5th wheel in Capitol Reef NP but it is first come-first served. We stayed at Thousand Lakes RV Park in Torrey, UT and enjoyed the stay.
