Low Sulpher Diesel
When I was filling up today I saw the sticker on the pump that says: Low Sulpher Diesel, do not use on 2007 or newer vehicles.
Is there going to be 2 types of diesel fuel, one for the older vehicles and one for the newer? I'm thinking about buying a new truck, but this has me worried.

From what I understand, Low Sulphur Diesel is what is commonly available now. 2007 trucks will require Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel, which is coming. I think you will be able to use ULSD in older trucks, but you won't be able to use the current LSD in the newer trucks. Most service stations will likely just carry ULSD in the future although some of the bigger truck stops may carry both, at least for a while. (It really depends if they have tanks to accomodate another separate kind of fuel).
That is my understanding anyway. You might want to research the implicatioins of new environmental regs before deciding on a new truck. 2007+ may prove to be less desirable than current models from a fuel economy and power perspective.

This entire Fuel/Motor issue is murky and as a school bus driver I have been to 4 or 5 seminars on the subject and still am somewhat confused. We did not buy a diesel in 05 and this issue was a prime reason we did not..We hope to be able to purchase a diesel in the 08 model year..Perhaps the fog will clear by that time.

[b]We bought a tank of the ULSD yesterday for our 06 Powerstroke. We made a pull today of serveral hundred miles in some pretty steep hills and I did not notice any performance issues. I watched to see if the truck smoked any less; of course it smokes very little anyway so it was not enough to make note of at this point. All the places where we stopped were already using the ULSD and had sign annotating the pumps as such. [b/]

The chart in the link below explains what is going on.
http://www.clean-diesel.org/highway.html
Calif is already 100% ULSD at retail outlets
The rest of the states will be 100% ULSD at retail outlets by 12/1/2010

Can anybody out there tell me the price differential between the two diesel fuels? I have read/heard from $.07 to $0.20/gal. Bet it runs to the high side!
