Spare tire safety strap

Great idea for the strap.
About every 6 months, I drop the spre tire down, check the air pressure and pump up to 80 lbs.
I spray the shaft with the same stuff we do the slides with and then put it back in place.
But I am going to add the strap as a extra safety measure.
If it comes off, not only could it do damage to the 5th wheel, but what about the people behind you!!!!

When I had my Missions replaced the Les Schwab guys used a power wrench to wind my spare cable back and totally stripped the nylon gear. They ordered one from Keystone and the replacement was made of brass and much heavier. Wonder why they put the cheap ones on in the beginning and not the better ones......No, I don't wonder, it's all a matter of dollars and cents.......

I have an extra lashing strap that I think I will put around the tire just in case. Thanks for the idea Jim!!!!

If I loose the spare for the Montana, I'm in bigger trouble than a trailer flat...I keep it in the bed of the truck!

Essentially, that's what I did after I lost my spare. Not only that, but I locked the spare in place with a bicycle cable and padlock. Only have to lose one and you get the message! Hope others will take heed. I've checked the mechanism on mine and it hasn't moved since I tied the tire up over 13 months ago and I've been East to West and North to South and all over the Midwest (20K miles or so). One of the things I appreciate about this forum is the positive sharing concerning problems we encounter. If we have had a problem and we can help prevent someone else from having the same problem, it's important that we share it. You don't know how disheartening it was to see that we had lost our spare (they aren't cheap to replace either).

Great Idea! I found my spare lose once this last summer, so tightening it is now part of my take down routine. I'm going to get a strap and I have the bike cable/lock. I, too, like this forum for its sharing. Thanks!

I was a happy person when we found our 5er with the spare under the unit. I never cared much for the bumper mounted spares. Now it looks like a safety strap is on my list of things to do before we head back home in the spring. Thanks for the info.
