2005 Duramax service advisory

we were getting our oil changed today and the service dept told Paul about a service advisory that just came out this week about the need to change the air intake for the 2005 duramax--this is needed if you happen to notice that it "runs hot" especially when a load os put on the engine. They have to order the "stuff" and then install it. This is under warrenty. you might want to check with your service guy next time you are at the dealer.

You might want to read a little on this topic on the Diesel Place site. This modification has been going on for probably a year by GM to try and address overheating issues with the LLY engines. I talked to a friend of mine that works for a dealer, and was going to get the new air intake, but I when I read up on it, there seemed to be some negatives to the mod. There were reports of lower fuel mileage, and I dang sure don't need that. Also, it really did nothing for the overheating, and the new air filter is about twice the price of the one the LLY's currently use. BTW, there is a service bulletin on the intermediate steering shaft rattle. GM has a new shaft design that is suppose to eliminate the rattle. My GMC is in dire need of that now. Just have to find the time to get it in the shop. It was lubricated when the truck had around 15K miles.

Will do you have the recall number or maybe a link to the post on the Diesel Place. I do use that site a couple of time a week, looked throw and didn't see the post may be old. I did an air intake Mod myself and would like to see GM's solution.Thanks

It is not a recall, but is TSB # 06-06-04-036C, issued 9/12/06.
It involves installing some extra seals in the frontend to affect air flow, and install an air cleaner assembly from an'06 model. And yes, the filter element for this unit is approximaely twice the price of the original '05.

SlickWillie, thanks for the update on the intermediate steering shaft. I stopped by my dealer today and he told me to bring it in Tuesday for the fix. It will be covered by warranty even tho I have 50K on the unit. He said it was a new designed shaft that has seals built in to keep the grease in so it will not rattle.

I am on my 4th steering shaft and it still rattles. Yes, I have the newly designed one also and it still rattles. Log on to the chevroletforum.com and see what others are saying about it. I have 52,000 on my truck.

A $1.50 radiator hose clamp fixed my steering column after the new one was much worse than the original. The fix is on dieselplace.com. Put the hose clamp around the shaft and secure to the plastic bushing up there under the dash. Has been like new ever since. 56k miles.
