Notice From DISH!

Rec'd an email from DISH that states we will no longer be able to receive east and west coast feeds for our RV account starting on 16 Nov. We are suppose to contact another company, and I am sure that means extra money for the service. Did anyone else with an RV account with DISH receive the same email?

We have dish, but we get local channels wherever we go so we haven't had the east/west feeds with them since the middle 90's in the stick house.

Here is a discussion on irv2.com about it. Apparently there is some sort of legal battle going on with it.
We have an RV adder to our home account. So we can get local feeds no matter where we go just by calling Dish and having them reprogram our account to whatever is the nearest city with locals. So no problems (yet) with ours.

DirecTV did that a couple of years ago, claiming it was an FCC thing, so it only stands to reason that sooner or later Dish would follow. Something about not being able to view programs before the would air in the local area, but doesn't make any sense to me. We have the NY feeds so if we travel to the West Coast we will be viewing all the network shows 3 hours before they would air on the local channels. So that kind of shoots a hole in their reasoning.

A few years back Dish lost a fight with the FCC and was prohibited from supplying DNS service to its customers. That is where the alternative DNS supplier came into the picture. They picked up many of the Dish customers. After a few years Dish was once again allowed to supply DNS to its customers. Some stayed with the alternative supplier and others went back to Dish.

Please note that DNS is not "local channels". I know this gets very confusing.

DirecTV was not involved with the DNS issue that Dish got tagged for. DTV has been able to supply DNS to its members without any problems. Both Dish and DTV were limited to supplying only one set of DNS channels to NEW customers. Many of us OLD TIMERS were able to be grandfathered in with our DNS channels which allowed us to keep both West Coast as well as East Coast channels. We also have "local channels" but once we get out of range for them we just do without them.

Many folks will change their service address to wherever they are currently located thus giving them their "local channels". We just use the over the air connection if we want local while on the road.

I have no idea why Dish is once again getting out of the DNS business. And unfortunately they didn't really give their customers much advance notice. Good luck to all you Dish customers. I sure hope DTV doesn't end up doing the same thing! Later, Dennis.

I have local channels through Dish also, and I pay $10.00 per mo. for that use. I also have distant network service that I never got rid of when Dish was once again offering locals. I went to Dish for locals so that I could get the HD which you can't get through Distant Network. They do not offer HD. I'm just about to say to heck with them all and just go back to regular RV antenna. Problem is where we are in the summers we can't get the local channels because we are so far down in a hole the antenna does not get out at all. To change to Direct would be way to costly as I have the Dish Traveler on the roof and that doesn't work for Direct. So therefore another possible $1800.00. Not worth it and will just continue to play games with Dish!!!

Dave

I should also add that Distant Network is not really local channels they are New York and Los Angeles feeds. Not local but it gives you the regular channels.

we got the email too and decided to go ahead and switch from DNS to local channels. We will notify them when we move so they can change our local stations for us. We'll see how that works out.

Having access to local channels is great if the park you are in does not have cable and you cannot get over the air stations. You can get the local network channels to keep up with the local weather conditions and forecast as well as all the news.
Only takes a few minutes to get the change over.

It works fine, but when you call (particularly if you move a lot) ask for an RV specialist. Not only will they be based in the US, but they won't complain and will just get it done.

We have been dragging our feet in looking into having cable added to our Montana...now here's another reason! One of our greatest concerns has been adding something to the rooftop and potentially setting ourselves up for leaks in the roof. With the way cable is going up and down the east coast (where we camp, at any rate), if we want to watch tv while camping, we need to find an alternative to existing services.

We have the tailgater with RV Pay As You Go service. We did not get the east or west feeds. Instead, we have the locals wherever we go. We paid a one-time setup fee for that. We just call them and tell them our new service address and within half an hour we have the locals for that locale. Works good. If you really want the coastal feeds, then this is no help.

We have the western feed channels which are the major network stations in San Francisco and yes, it's $10 a month from an associated company. The eastern feed is from New York.

talk to dish but i think you have distant channels system.

you may want to just go to the "local" channel system...call dish as you move around the country.

I have a Dish Tailgater. When we arrive at a new location I call Dish and change our service address to our new location and receive all appropriate networks. Never a problem.
