12V Lithium Ion Batteries

Man I only thought batteries cost a lot. Prices will probably come down in time.
Take a look at these: Lithium Ion Batteries

Boy Howdy ... pricey ... I think the new hybrid electric cars that are going to save the environment have a similar version of these batteries. The "steeler" sure doesn't mention the replacement cost of these batteries once their lifespan runs out. Maybe original owners just don't plan on keeping them that long. Look up Prius replacement battery costs ... it's beyond fathoming ....

Are there many benefits to these over the lead-acid or AGM deep cycle or dual 6v options? They only have a 5 year warranty so it seems they aren't gonna last any longer than the usual stuff. But at 15 lbs for a 40AH or 27 lbs for 80AH that sure seems lighter than the lead-acid/AGM stuff, but for $600 (40AH) & $1,000 (80AH) it sure makes me want to keep the heavier stuff.

Wowser!
Will the benefit outweigh the cost? Not in my lifetime.

You guys missed the point. These batteries are "GREEN" . That means they make you feel better at night and probably produced with a grant that we paid for in the first place. G

And they probably required at least twice the amount of engery to manufacture vs a standard lead acid.

there out of my price range for sure. I can buy a lot of Wal-Mart batteries for that amount in 15 years.

In 4 years of fulltiming, and not much booondocking, I put two Walmart deep cycle batteries in mine, $79. each. The second one because I stored it without disconnecting the battery, my bad. Unless you boondock alot, I see no need for expensive batteries, or even duals or golf cart batteries. Am I right????

Yes you probably are correct. We run with two batteries because we've been in areas, Kansas being one of them, where storms can knock the power out for long periods of time. Being able to run a fan or two and lights without worrying about it is worth the extra expense for us.

Actually, the point is the recharge rate. These are rated at 3000 to 5000 recharges. That would last a lifetime for us since we don't do much primative camping. If you had to recherge them every day, they would still last a long time, 10 to 15 years give or take.

Chris Dunphy over at Technomads has done a real good analysis of Lithium ION vs Led Acid. You can read about it at http://www.technomadia.com/2011/11/l...-battery-cost/

Good link Rick especially since it confirms what I suspected!
Thanks.

Certainly the technology is evolving....this item came out a while back but supposedly is starting to get feet and is moving forward (unless something kills it!)

http://www.gizmag.com/solar-battery-cheap-power/12676/

One of these could hold enough energy to run an entire home for half a day, imagine what it could do for an RV?

When it comes to the environment Green is code for SUCKER!

Us RVer's are pretty green to begin with while all the other folks are just "green" with envy that we have figured it out!

I don't know if you're right or not Phil, but I agree with you so we can BOTH be non-green and too old to learn new tricks especially at 10 times what it costs today. If they claim 3000 to 5000 recharges how come they are only warranted for 5 years? I'll go read the article on the link now. I hope to learn something, but then forget it soon enough, argh.

On edit: Read the article... I don't need off the grid power like some want. If a lead-acid deep cylce is $85 where I live today, I can purchase three of those every five years and spend WAY less than a single Lithium battery today and accomplish what I need. The technology sounds promising but its cost is just not practical for me, yet. I congratulate you folks with deeper pockets if you can do this sooner than later.
