Highway navigation

Next exit or Good Sam's Exit now, or whatever it's called.
I read that Sam's book is better because each state is linked together, like the next page is the next state, also it is spiral bound for ease of use.
We had a Next Exit and liked it, but the Exit now seems to be good as well.
Opinions?

Having both......The Next Exit is good but I like the 2011 RV'ers Friend to be much much better when it comes letting you know if the place is RV friendly or not. Hope that kinda answers your question.

Ha! both of us were wondering which of them seemed to be better. I laugh when I tell people how much fun it is traveling, Next exit open on Sue's lap, Woodalls, local maps, all being scoured over to find a place for the night.
We have been 'out of it' for 4 years.
I will look into the RV'ers friend, appreciate the tip.

We use the TrailerLife Navigator Software. It runs off of our laptop, which is installed in the TV and attached to a USB GPS antenna. It has Next Exit built into the software, along with a vast POI data base. It also lists all campgrounds in the TrailerLife book. It is a GPS and all of the books in one place, plus it is a Trip Planner.

Wow, that sounds like a good package, I don't know if I want a laptop in the front seat. I have always been hesitant to have Sue using a laptop in case of an accident, (we really never know when that would happen, do we) and it just wouldn't work on the console. I don't want her to have the screen embedded in her forehead ala air bag.

Ren, thanks for the tip, I just ordered the Rvers Friend on Amazon.

I agree....no laptops on the laps. Mine is mounted between the front seats for safety. It is bolted to the floor and the laptop is strapped to the mount. I use a mount similar to this one: http://www.mobiledesk.com/10-45XND.htm

I am still searching for a backup camera that can plug into the laptop's USB. I don't know if a USB can work with a 50' cable.

That is a good mount, most of the HVAC guys working for big companies have that mount. I knew you would have a slick permanent mount.
Have you checked with Tim at RV cams on the USB?
I will check with the Electronics store where I got my surveillance equipment for you. What type camera cable end will you have? there is the RCA and the multi-prong cable Tim has.

Nope, a 50' USB cable won't work. The maximum length is 16' 5":

http://www.usb.org/about/faq/ans5

However, you CAN daisy-chain up to 5 USB Hubs with 5 meter cables to obtain that length....

Rick, do they have an adapter from a camera lead to USB that would work?

Thanks Rick and Ozz. Since I have the laptop already there, I thought using the laptop screen would work out well. Here is one that I found, but have not dug deep into the specs to see if it would work. No, I have not checked with Tim. That is on my list.

Ozz, it's the Exit Now that links them together. We have the Next Exit and it's fine. But next time we'll get the Exit Now. It wasn't even on the market when we bought the Next Exit back in 2007.

Don't forget the RV'ers Friend for info on truck stops on non-interstates, if you do those roads like we do. They even have an indicator for "RV's Welcome." According to the description that means RV's are welcome to park overnight, usually boondocking. We prefer the non-interstates. Much more interesting and usually far more relaxing a drive. And often no more distance, sometimes less, sometimes more.
