Our second trip to the Great Oregon Coast

We began on Tuesday August 28. We left Bakersfield and trekked up highway 99 to highway 46 across to I-5. We motored on northward seeing very few RVs of any kind. We did see a couple of south bound Montanas. We tried to signal them with the double flash of the headlights but got no response.

We overnighted in a nice park in Lodi. It is located very near the corner of I-5 and highway 12. Very convenient and nice park to do and Overnighter. If you are looking for a nice place to rest near the Stockton / Sacramento area then Flag City RV Park and Resort is an excellent location and facility to rest for a day or two.

Located near the facility is a large Flying J service center. In addition to having all the types of fuel you might need they offer human food that is good but not great. Choose carefully and you will get about what you want at a reasonable cost. If you have your RV Card from Flying J then you get reductions on your fuel costs as well as human food. Every little bit helps.

At the RV fuel island there is located facilities for filling propane tanks. Also dump stations as well as air compressors to keep your tires aired to their proper numbers. All in all a very convenient place to get a lot done. Sometimes it can get a bit hectic but at least the facilities are there and can be used by the RVing public.

OK. Enough on this. After our night at Flying Flags we fueled up and had breakfast and then headed north on I-5 once again. Our next stop was to be near Corning California. There is an Indian Casino located near there. Rolling Hills Casino has an RV park located on the south west section of their facility. All sites are pull thrus. And sites are adequately spaced to not feel too hemmed in.

While not a first class operation it is very nice and it is obvious that they are maintaining it well. The electric and water service was very good. The sewer system worked well too.

The Casino has a couple of restaurants on site. They provide a very good choice. The buffet is the more logical choice simply because of the great variety of food they present and of course the relatively reasonable price. Again you must pick and choose to make things work well for you.

We stayed a couple of nights. When we hooked up we headed up the road about a mile of two to a Flying J Center. We fueled up and headed for our next destination. We're headed for the 7 Feathers Casino and Resort.

We arrived at about 6pm and setup. 7 Feathers has dramatically improved their RV sites. They now have over a hundred well and beautifully landscaped mostly all pull-thrus. All sites have a level concrete pad surrounded by small trees and bushes and a thick mat of grass. Everything worked well. They have excellent club rooms, and great recreation facilites...... spa, pool, exercise room. Just about everything.

They even have a shuttle system that runs about every 15 to 20 minutes. They will pick you up at your site and take you to the Casino and when ready to go home they will deliver you back to your RV site. Very nice service.

We then left 7 Feathers and headed north again. We arrived at Spirit Mountain Casino. This facility has no RV park. But they do have a very nice paved area to park and stay overnight. You are assigned a specific RV site. The sites are large enough to put out your slides. You can run your generators as long as they are not bothering your neighbors. There is 24 hour security. They also supply a shuttle to and from the Casino. We were lucky and pulled into a site that was almost perfectly level. This facility has several food outlets. The food was good and reasonable.

They have a fuel station on site but we did not use it. It appeared to be active and competitive.

Next stop Lincoln City. We had planned to stay at Devil's Lake State Park. But they had no sites lagre enough for our rig. We drove on down the road about 3 miles. Found a place called Oceanview RV Park. It is built on the side of a hill. We got a place on the highest tier. Nice park and we are using it as our base to go up and down the coast.

When we checked in we ran into a former employee. A friend and employee named Wayne and his wife are helping manage the park. What a small world. We easily could have stayed at another park and never even have known that they were here.

We also visited with Peggy down in Newport. She has the dogs from which we obtained our latest little Doxie named Buddy. Buddy got to meet and play with one of his cousins. They were a riot and completely enjoyed themselves. It was a great visit.

This brings up to date thru Sept. 8.

More as we move on down the road.

Enjoying our trip.

Dennis and Mary Kay

I "forgot" to mention that on a day trip up to the Tillamok area we visited a little seaside village called Pacific City. They have ramps that you can drive down and onto the beach. Wellllllllll ... just let me say that that was a mistake! It looked so inviting and there were lots of other pickups and cars out on the beach. We'll be safe. Right?! WRONG! I made it about 25 yards and was actually on what looked to be some good wet packed sand. Well the 450 is just too heavy and the rear end is just too light for that sort of thing. Of course the dually is not designed for this type of driving.

We were very fortunate as a good Samaritan came to our rescue. Has us out in about 10 minutes. No more attempts at beach driving for a while! We're kicking ourselves because we didn't take any photos.

That has been the most exciting part of our adventure so far. More to come.

Good report Dennis. Good to know about that Lodi park. We would love to be on the Or coast this time of year. Yes, it is a small world. We were 500 miles up in BC and ran into folks we knew. Wish you could join us up here as in about 10 days there will be 4 Montanas in the front yard. More on that in another post.

See you all in the desert.

A great state park south of Lincoln City and just north of Bandon on 101 is Bullards Beach State Park
The sites were all back ins most all with full hook up and plenty big enough for our Monty. Our site was pretty much surrounded with bushes and trees making for tons of privacy from the neighboring sites. We highly recommend it to any one passing through or for an extended stay.

One other suggestion for the Cheese lovers amoung us doing the Oregon Coast is the Tillamook Cheese Factory tour. The tour is OK but the Extra Sharp Chedder is the best. Just wish I had the room as I would have bought an entire wheel.

Dennis if it was the same place I am thinking you are correct as I also thought it would be a cake walk. Luckily I have a 4X4 and was able to get on the beach with the 4X4. That was the easy part. As we drove down the beach I realized the tide was coming in and as you can imagine we wanted to get out in a hurry. Getting back out not only required the 4X4 but Low Range as well. It was great driving for a couple miles on the beach but I would never try it again.

Ditto on the cheese factory tour. The cheese is great, and their ice cream is even better. Tillamook also has one of the best aircraft museums in the country. It is housed in a WWII blimp hangar, which is itself a real marvel. I think they said it is the largest wooden building in the world. Great area to visit.

After driving on the beach be sure and wash the under side of your truck. If you don't you will find rust forming in places that you didn't know you had.

The cheese factory tour is great. We saw the museum from a distance but did not have time to stop. We will get it next time as you can be assured we will be back.

Glenn I'm glad you had the 4x4 because it is needed.

Clutch we did not get far enough to even get wet! But thank for the reminder about the water.

Dennis & Mary Kay that was a very interesting report on your travels. Annie & I went to the Oregon coast last October. We stayed at Neskowin RV Park just south of the town of Neskowin. Neskowin is north of Lincoln City and south of Pacific City. We love that area.

Enjoy the rest of your trip. Maybe we'll see ya again at Mt. Shasta.

Don and Annie,

We took a drive down that way a couple of days ago. It is a beautiful area.

Karen and Virgil,

Thank you for the invitation. This trip we're headed directly down the Oregon coast into northern California and continue working our way south. Our last stop before heading home will be Morro Bay, CA.

We have not done much in the central and eastern part of Oregon but want to do that part of the country too. We'll definitely put in a visit to you folks when we get over that direction.

Hello Phil and Cathy,

It looks like there may be a slight intersection on or about the 26th of Sept. We should arrive at Fortuna, CA on that date. If you are still in or around that area then perhaps we can get our paths to cross. If not ..... Later.

Hope your trip is as enjoyable as ours has been. We're seeing some beautiful country and visiting with friends..... It just doesn't get much better than this!
Safe travels.
