Good point Ken, Progressive may still want to insure the Montana as a "Florida" based RV even if I tell them it will actually never be located in Florida. The only reason I am thinking they could look at it differently is due to our experience with our bigger boats in years past. We had considered making a trip from Illinois to Florida on our boat and staying for the winter. Our insurance company told us they would not insure our vessel if it was in Florida during hurricane season (fall). Maybe Progressive would rather insure the RV in an Illinois zip code with the understanding it would never visit Florida again, don't know.

Joe I have one correction if you make a purchase this year you will not be eligible for Florida Homestead exemption till tax year 2016.

I just returned from Sarasota County office helping a friend apply for the homestead. She paid $51,000.00 for Mobile Home and lot. Tax without Homestead Exemption $900.00 With $600.00

Thanks Ken, that makes sense. We were wondering how that would work because on the day we would close on the house we would still be Illinois residents and have Illinois Driver's licenses. Then once everything was done and over (we actually owned the property) we could start the process of changing DL's and registrations over to new address. It would make sense then that you would just go get the homestead exemption later for the next years property taxes.

You have to change everthing over to FL and now when you go to the DMV office you need 2 types of ID, So don't forget youe passport and DL from IL. Remember once a FL resd your taxes can only go up 3% per year. We became FL resd 15 years or more ago and would never change as your Ins is FL and everything is now FL . As far as the 6 months go you still get a water bill for 12 months at the FL address so that is akk you need sailer

I think if you go to the court house in Ft Myers you will get all your questions answered. You don't have to own property to become a resident and change your domicle to FL. sailer

Thanks all for information. Looks like we will simply change everything over to Florida the day after closing on a house. Now the search continues. The process has been the realtor sends us a couple possibilities, I check the Crime Report internet site, then I check numerous street views on Google Earth to see what all the surrounding neighborhood looks like, then if all of that looks good we dig into some background on the house (when was it sold last, how much did it sell for, taxes, etc....).

We may spend 2 or 3 hours investigating several houses without even leaving our Montana. We can narrow them down pretty good that way and not waste our time or the Realtor's time. So far we have only looked at three and are not impressed......the search continues.
