Bike rack/rear carrier progress
I have started the project, I found a very stout Powder-coated carrier at Croft Trailer here in K.C., I bought the receiver square tube, and the adapter. I think it will work well.

Rated for 600#, I guess it's going to be how crazy I feel when I'm loading it up.
I only plan on the case of Carona...so Peep's can follow me to the campground to party, the two Honda's, the grill and our two bikes.
I was thinking, a guy could cut the bottom out of a big cooler, set that over the Honda's and it would look like a cooler with hot dogs in it, instead of the generators????? I just may do that. (I will still have them bolted down.)

Ozz I have been thinking about one of these since I saw yours. I would like to be able to take the gas grill and some other things without pulling a trailer this looks good thanks.

I'm sure it's probably on here somewhere, but what have you done for a hitch on the back of trailer to carry this kind of weight? I would like to be able to pull a small 2 wheel trailer with a motorcycle on it, or possibly pull a jeep wrangler. The 2 wheel trailer would not have much tongue weight and pulling a jeep would have mostly just the backward pull. Just curious.
Thanks

Here is the link to my Hitch install. Any good hitch or auto supply will have auniversal kit that will work.

You might look at the tracking 2 wheel trailers, really slick

Ozz I love the cooler idea. To insure nobody tampers with the cooler how about a hazardous waste decal facing traffic?

Lippert offers a hitch but it's only rated for (I think) 150#. I'm not sure if this is a limitation of the Monty frame or how Lippert has made the hitch itself. Anyway, I thought this was a bit light.
Have you done anything special to the frame to accommodate the 600# carrier? Are you comfortable that the frame can take the weight?

Good questions, from what I have read the frame folks do not want (or do not endorse) any thing greater than 200# weight on the rear frame. I am not enough of an expert to really know how much weight would be too much. Also, if there was a full 600# what would happen? The metal would not crack, I would think, the bolts would not tear out of each side, thinking about it, there would be only 300# per side of the frame. The rating limitation from Lippert on their endorsed hitch is the 1.5" I think. I have the 2" receiver.
I do not intend on loading up 600#, that is just the rating of the carrier I bought. I imagine I will have around 100#, 50# each for the generators, 40# or so for the Grill, 50# or so for the carrier, and around 90# for the two bikes and my home made bike rack. The case of Corona will seldom be a complete 24 bottles, but I imagine around 25# for that.
Looks like I will have around 300# or so. So, it looks like I am a little over their warning weight.
I ain't scared....

There has to be some consideration given to the up and down force being put on it from railroad crossings ,bumps in the road etc.Not sure how much extra force and stress those might add.

I had a receiver hitch built for the back of a carrilite trailer I had that I carried a Yamaha TW200 dual purpose motorcycle on. It was built with thick wall 2" square tubing and welded to the frame. Everything was great for a couple of years, trips to Colorado, then one trip to East Texas, between Corsicana and Waco the road had a lot of rolling bumps. Stopped for fuel in Waco and I happened to walk behind trailer and TW was almost dragging the ground. The 2" tubing had split horizontally, I guess this would be metal fatigue. Rode bike to Temple and welder jacked hitch back up and then beefed it up considerably. Never had any more trouble. Used the hitch mostly for pulling a 10' trailer after that with 2 atv's on it. My point is, there is a lot of added stress when you hit bumps and get the bouncing effect of load. I do alot of welding and never would have believed the tubing would split.
