You've got to do this at least once.

Took a group of folks on a desert moonlight hike the other night, during the full moon. This works in other parts of the country, particularly if you have snow on the ground. Pick a trail or wash you have hiked recently so you know the terrain and go and have a great experience. When we take folks out we talk about the geology, plants and animals, but we usually have a large group so we don't experience the animals. Smaller quite groups can experience more. We had one 70 year old in the group that said it was the best adventure of her life. Kind of sad, if that was true, but I'm glad we could provide it for her. One word of advice, many snakes are nocturnal, so the best time to do this is during the winter months if you are in snake country.

Being out side at night is fun. The western sky at night is beautiful especially when you are up 8 to 10 thousand feet.

Great post Dick. I was in my mid twenties the first time I saw the night sky unimpeded by city light pollution or clouds. There was no moon, but the number of stars were utterly amazing.

Like Tom said, the Milky Way looks like you painted it in the sky when you get away from all the light pollution out west where the air is thin and without all the humidity. BEAUTIFUL!

Have not taken a moonlight hike, but have gone on moonlight and moonless horseback rides. It's a phenomenal experience that's hard to describe. The rider has to put absolute trust in the horse.

Wen you are in high altitude, really dark areas with dark adapted eyes and see the wonders of the sky, it can't help but to tug at your heart strings...

Don't know if you know where the High Sierra's National Forest is, but we have been up there with no moon and its just great. Then we hiked up there in full moon light and that was great also. So to answer your question yes we have!
