DOMETIC MICRO/CONVECTION OVEN QUESTION
Okay, so we have had our rig for over 2 years and this past weekend was the first time we used the convection portion of our Dometic DOTRC17BC Micro/Convection oven. The directions for convection cooking state to use the cooking rack when using the convection oven. Our rack for convection cooking is round and has 3 legs. When we went to use the rack we noticed that one leg was shorter than the other two which means whatever you put on it will not sit level in the oven. So the question is, is there a reason for this or did we just get a defective rack?

Mine is the same--i called the company and they said it was supposed to be that way. I never have had "funny" results using it and I use it frequently. worked for a cake--I think because the carosal (sp) goes around it works

There are white rubber tips on our legs. We just adjust the tips so all are even. Larry

Hi
We didn’t know you were supposed to use a “Rack”. We just put an oven rated cooking dish on the carousel and it seems to work ok.

No, it is pretty clearly stated in the directions on ours to use a rack. Jim

There are diagrams in the instruction book as to when to use the rack and when not to and when to use the metal tray, vs. glass, etc. Depends on weather you are using micro or convection cooking

Since we are on micro/convection #4 we have acquired several metal pans and racks. All our racks are level, all legs same length. Since we have gotten a surge suppressor we haven't lost another oven. The microwave never failed to work but the convection part of the oven has failed 3 times. We use the convection very often and are very satisfied with it.

My understanding (based on what the DW tells me!) is that when using the convection part of the oven, a metal rack is used to elevate the item so that the heat can surround the item that is being cooked. It is very important that she follows the listed procedures next month so that our pumpkin pies turn out correctly for Thanksgiving. I trust she will do it properly, since I will be outside watching ball games and know better than to check on her or question her!! I am thankful that I do not have Thanksgiving cooking duty and am really thankful that I don't have to worry about glass trays, metal trays, cooking instructions, etc. etc.

Well, you got me curious, so I looked. Our tips are black. Our three legs are even. Our convection works great after we learned a few tricks. We rarely use the propane oven. Transition to and outcome of the convection oven is very satisfactory.

Well tomorrow I am going to call Dometic and see if they are still sticking with their story of "that's the way its suppose to be". Ours does have white rubber feet, but if you extend the one to make it even with the others it just goes back into place once you put weight on the rack. We really like the convenience of the convection now that we have started using it. I guess as the final option, I can always cut the other 2 legs to make the rack set evenly.

Jack, let us know what you find out. We too have been thinking of shortening the other 2 legs. If you do a Pizza all the topping tend to run to the low side and off onto the glass plate and generally make a mess (don't like cleaning up messes). BIL just bought a new 3402 and their rack is level. Do like the convection tho.

Well I called Dometic this morning (800) 544-4881 about our lopsided convection rack. The lady I spoke to, Sandy, certainly didn't think it was normal. She quoted me a price of $33.12 for a replacement. Then I played my sympathy card and let her know that even though the oven was 2 1/2 years old we had only just used the convection portion and rack for the first time a couple of weeks ago. I told her that I thought it was a defective part and that the warranty for the oven is 3 years. She must have agreed because she is sending me a replacement free of charge. Hopefully the new one is not lopsided. Time will tell.

Just to update all of you, we received our new rack for the convection oven today and lo & behold all 3 legs ore the same length. Guess the one that came with the rig was defective and got past the QA inspection.

Well all our legs are the same now, as I shorten the other two lastnight. Wonder if they thought things would cook better with a slight angle? Problem we had was with things like pizza, sauce would tend to run off the low side and some times even had trouble keeping the pan on the rack. So now problem solved.

Michelle & Ann,
That was my next choice if Dometic wouldn't step up. I could only imagine how a cake or pie, like pumpkin would have come out on that uneven thing
