Removing WH Anode Rod?

What size socket do I need to use to remove my water heater anode rod?

I know the answer is on this board somewhere, but I also know it will take longer for me to find it than it will take for one of our experts to respond to my post! Thanks again. Y'all are the greatest.

Hi Bean,
I think that was 1 1/16".
When you remove it, drain the Tank first....leave the pressure relief valve open. When you install the new one, use pipe dope, or Teflon tape on the first 3 threads or so. Doesn't take much.
Good luck.

1 1/16 socket. I have cut off peace of host that I stick in after the anode rod is removed to wash out the settlements.

1 1/16" is the correct size. But I took mine out with a 1 1/8" socket since I did not have the 1 1/16" one. It was not too tight and came out pretty easily. If it was tight, the larger socket may round off the corners. I am going to get the correct size before I do it again.

Or, if you don't have a 1 1/16th socket, two big adjustable wrenches will work in an emergency...one on the anode and the second to turn the first.
