Stress Crack

I have a stress crack on the left side of my bed room slideout at about a 45 degree angle from the corner of the slide. It will get much wider when I'm hooked up.

How many have had this problem? And what is the fix.

Is Keystone aware of this problem?

Thanks

louiebobo,
If you have checked into this Forum very much then you know there has been extensive discussion regarding this issue. Try doing a search to find the threads that discuss at length how to get it fixed.

Yes. Keystone is aware and is generally making good on the fix. Good luck

Yes Keystone is aware. This was a problem on the older units and Montana has been standing behind it. Contact customer service at (574) 535-2100 and explain the problem and I am sure they will fix you up.

I had that same stress crack on my rig.Mines a 2001 model, but I bought new(3 year old left over unit)in 2004.Keystone paid for the fix with no out of pocket money from me.Its just a matter of beefing up the frame in that area. Its been crack free ever since.

Keystone has a service advisory #4-040 on the repair for the bedroom slide-out stress crack.

Basically it is not a broken frame problem but rather a frame flex problem in the overhang. The repair consists of cutting a vertical relief in the outside wall in the narrow area below the slide. The cut should be 1/4 to 5/16 inch deep. You fill the cut with silicone and place a plastic "T" molding (KRV # 150066)over the cut. You can get "T" molding that will work at most RV dealerships if you don't want to order it from Keystone. Then you do a standard fiberglass repair on the original stress crack.

Keystone would not warranty my 2001 as I was the 3rd owner but they did send me the "KIT". The kit included the service advisory page and a 10" piece of the "T" molding at no charge.

The "Team Montana" phone number on the service advisory is (866) 273-1450.

Others have had good luck getting Keystone to do the repair and or reimburse them for having it done. I will just get it done locally with the "kit" since I am so far from the nearest dealer.

I had two very small stress cracks on both of my rear slides and found them after the warranty expired. Keystone took care of them no questions asked. Our dealer had a fiberglass repair company come to their lot and made the repairs there. The only think I do not care for is that you can see where they touched up the paint when the sun is shining on it just right. I just try not looking up there.

When you call Customer Service, ask to speak to Lon Nelson. Explain to him in very pleasant terms what your problem is. He is really customer oriented and he and his staff do their utmost to make customers happy. He made us happy and he is also a "happy" type person, easy to talk to. He won't put you down. He understands the problems.

Here is a pic. The round hole you see is a hole drilled in the crack in an attempt to stop it from spreading.

That's the same kind of stress cracks we had and Keystone repaired them all even though our rig was 4 years old at the time.

We had a stress crack under the bedroom in the corner near the generator door. Took a picture to our dealer (Colorado Springs) and the dealer emailed the picture to Keystone. Keystone sent a new panel within two weeks to our dealer for replacement. We've had our 2004 2955RL for over a year now and just love it. I have followed the forums since we got our Monty last year and want to thank everyone for all their valuable information.

louiebobo, drilling a hole at the end of the crack is what we used to do on the Navy Airplanes when I was in the service to stop the crack from spreading. It worked on aluminum but it looks like that trick does not work on fiberglass. Hope that you can get this fixed right away as it does not look good in the picture.

We had the bedroom stress crack on our 3295RK. Even though it was out of warranty they fixed it. They did such a good job we cannot even tell they did anything to it. Only difference is we now have the little strip of molding where they cut the relief. I was impressed with the job they did. Of course it took them a long time to do it. But since we were not needing the rig it worked out OK.

I have some pictures of the before and tomorrow I'll take one of the after. I can't find my before pics but as soon as I do I'll post them. [OK I've added the "after" picture.] (11/02 10pm)

The stress crack got much longer and wider when we had the pin box/frame problem and the picture Louiebobo posted looks about like ours looked but without the drilled hole. I could never bring myself to drill a hole in it. I hope you don't have the pinbox/frame problem too.
