Critters
Recently we have been having a migration of squirrels, skunks, raccoons and the occasional opossum. Fortunately only the 'coons have been the only problem. For the last two months we have caught 4 squirrels, 2 raccoons, 1 'possum, and including last night, 2 skunks.
I confidently took a towel this morning to cover the cage and transport "Pepe" to the forest preserve. As I put the towel over the cage Pepe sprayed. As I hauled him up the drive to my truck he sprayed again. The bad thing is I did not wear gloves like I usually do and my hand really smells from the saturated towel.
Pepe is now happily romping at the forest preserve and after washing with dawn and vinegar my hand still smells. Towel is bad and the cage really stinks, but maybe it's bad enough to keep all the critters away.

OH man! you must be a real animal lover to cage AND transport "PEPE" to be released, most of us (I'm Guessing) would not let Pepe get anywhere near us!He would end up taking a Dirt Nap and pushing up daises,No offense but If I meet ya I won't be Shaking your hand

almost like Snipe hunting for me, I never seem to have the luck you do. LOL. I guess it's time to get a trap.

We recently had a critter burrowing under the foundation of our business. Animal control set a trap and caught a skunk. DW asked if he was going to release it somewhere. He hesitated but finally told her it would be euthanized due to frequent rabies found in skunks.

Rabies if the biggest reason that when we had the S&B I sent them to skunk heaven. Now that we're full timing we just move and let them do their thing.

The first skunk we caught was a young one and was too stupid to spray. Maybe the second one was mom or dad. We do not intentionally kill any living thing, well maybe mosquitos. Like the Indians these critters were her before us so why not let them live. Setting the trap tonight closer to the deck and the skunks seem to stay in the rear half of the yard as evidenced by the ground they tear up looking for grubs.

Thanks for the recipe. A couple of folks recommended it so I rinsed my hands with peroxide twice and than washed with dawn and it worked w/o the baking soda.

Dick, Tomato Juice works pretty well also. Follow it with the Dawn. Jim

I have used this mixture to bathe my dog and it works.
I mixed a batch proportionately with 4 quarts of peroxide, and scrubbed it in with rubber gloves.
My veterinarian told me about it

Last night we caught something but there was a well executed jail brake. The live trap was turned 180 degrees and the rod that holds the one end in place was pulled out and the end was open. Skunks are too stupid to pull such an escape so it must have been 'coons. During the evening Louise watched two of them parading towards the trees. Trap reset for tonight and the escape hatch is against an immovable object. With my luck I'll catch another skunk and not the pesky 'coon. If it is a skunk I think I will "execute w/o prejudice" in order to eliminate a potential rabies carrier.

Caught another possum, a large one. We decided to let him go in our back woods rather than transporting him to the forest preserve west of us. 'Coons are our biggest concern especially on our bedroom deck. So Mr. possum decided to stay in the cage even when left open and unattended. I moved him to the back of the property and he finally left. I guess they're as dumb as skunks but don't smell.

Confirmed last night that 'possoms are dumber than skunks. Pretty sure the same one came back. Must like the bait enough to spend the night in jail. At least the 'coons are staying away.

Dick-- To keep the critters from turning over the trap, turn an electric fence post(the rod type) upside down and put the top through the corner of the cage and pound it about five or six inches into the ground. If the critter can pull it out and turn the cage over for a great escape then he's bigger than you want to mess with anyway.

Thanks Ron. We blocked it so they can't escape through the rear and can't turn it over. Last night we heard a bunch of chattering and the motion light went on. 3 huge 'coons were waking in a circle near the trap. Looks like we caught a big one as well. Transported it to new digs and hopefully we can get another one tonight.

Caught another dumb possum last night. This was not the same as its' "child" from before. This one, rather than being released in our yard, was relocated a couple of miles away.

one note of caution. If you make the cleaning formula others have given, don't store it when you are finished. I heard that it can become explosive, so use it all or discard the remainder.
