I would just add in the convenience factor. When I was researching, others convinced me to go with the onboard Onan especially if you will be using it all the time so you don't have to be lugging around the gens in and out of vehicle or wherever all the time. I would say it depends on how much the gen will be used. Switchover is also easier. I suspect a lot of onboard gen people might be chiming in here??

On-board was an option we were looking at when we factory-ordered our Big Sky. After much thought, including that we wanted the storage that the Onan would take up and that we understand that the Onan can suck up propane, we went with our own on-board solution for our Hondas:

This is what I use. Less than $300. It will run your whole trailer. Has built in 30Amp RV plug in and S&B plug in also that I use. Fairly quiet to run. I don't use it very often as I like FH. Easy pull start. I am sure it is not for everyone but it works for me when I need it.

I recently bought a Yamaha 2000i. Quite pleased with it. I've been preparing the Monty, for a long trip, in 20 degree weather and the Yamaha starts quickly. Both the Honda and Yamaha are the cream of the crop. I selected the Yamaha because all of the controls and outlets are on the same side. Otherwise it was a tossup. My only concern with the Boliy was reliability. I haven'e seen any longer term reports on how well they run and how reliable they are. I just got rid of a 1000 watt Chinese off brand that took forever to start and had fuel leaks that drove me nuts. In the beginning it ran fine, but after a year i started having the problems. It was truly cheap,$150 on sale for $129 when i bought it. I paid $20 for the extended warranty but it has to be returned to the seller (Northern Tools) for them to repair or replace. This meant two 70 mile round trips and 3 weeks for an answer, so I said the heck with it and bought the Yamaha.

I have had a hondas for years. All have worked great.
I personally will buy a product from any other source than China and I am will to pay extra just to not support China.
Just my opinion.

We have a built in Onan 5500 on propane. I only need to be concerned with two fuels, diesel/truck and propane for camper. No gas cans laying around. Haven't used the gen very much (17hrs in one yr) but its there ready to go at all times.

Installed Onan this past summer. We had a toyhauler prior to the Montana with onboard gen and I guess we got spoiled. When we travel we sleep in Walmart parking lots and like the convienence.Do some dry camping in Colorado and NF campgrounds without electric. Also like being able to use even for lunch stops, etc. Our trailer came with the gen prep option which made install relatively easy. I bought and installed for under $4K. Durango, CO dealer quoted $6500 if they install. I wrestled with all the options and came to the conclusion portable and onboard are both good. I am very happy with my choice.

Please don't park near me with that.

There was someone near to us at the Hershey Show with one like that. When it came 10 o'clock and quiet hours and they finally shut it off you could here the Thank You's from just about everyone in the Parking Lot. It was loud enough that I had to put my hand on our Hondas to tell if they were running or not.
