Montana Plug Types

Building an extension cord for the Monty. Anyone know what the plug types are on the standard Monty 50A cord?

Thanks ... Jeff

The Marinco number is 6364 CRN. Also check Conntek. The connector alone is pretty expensive, but I bought a 50 amp to 30 amp adapter for about $55, and it used the same 50 amp twist lock connector.

Just a word of warning here gang, don't let that terminology fool you into thinking you can plug the unit into a 220 to 250 volt outlet, such as a welder plug.

I have had to deny many warranty issues where the retail plugged into 220 volt power and blowing everything up in the unit. Make absolutely sure you are using 110!!

Trailers that use a 50 amp cord will get 240 volts. Half of the buss bar is fed with one hot leg and half with the other. The circuit providing the power needs to be 125/250 such as a stove circuit. MIMF is right about the welder plug. A proper plug on a trailer cord will not fit in anything but the right outlet assuming the outlet is correct for the circuit. If in doubt, have it checked out.

He doesn't need that part to make an extension if he plans on using it with the power cord he already has. What he needs is another male plug like the one on the factory power cord and a corresponding female plug. I found both at Lowes or home Depot (I don't remember which).

I'm thinking maybe I'll just build a second cord. This is really just to go from the Monty to my truck with the Honda EU2000 Generators. Have all the adapters I need, pretty easy to just switch the cord end if my needs change. I do plan to mount an outlet on the front of the Monty eventually, little cold up here to do that project at the moment.

Look at our signature picture where we have two Honda 2000's on our homemade carrier. We made a 30 amp male to 50 amp female cord about 20" long that stays connected to our primary Honda. The 30 amp male plug was cheap; the 50 amp female I found on eBay for about $70.

On Edit...

Just re-read your original post and realize you want to make an extension cord. In this case, use 4 wire male and female plugs. Cheap and available at any big box home store. As Jim wrote, a stove plug will work for the male end, and a 50 amp receptacle will work for the female end.

On further edit...

I used a 50 amp receptacle to split two separate circuits (20 amps) so that I could plug into a friend's house outlets. In this way I had two 20 amp feeds but not 40 amps combined.

The adapter I made uses two 110 volt circuits, not one 240 volt circuit. It doesn't matter if each circuit is on the same phase or not as long as they are on different circuits.

Now, to your original post. Yes, you will be using one 240 volt circuit (for 50 amps) which separates each leg of 110 volts so that (as Jim stated) each part of the buss receives 110 volts. As long as the neutral is connected, you will get 110 volts on each leg. If you lose the neutral you will get 240 volts throughout your 5er and you will permanently lose any appliances that have a lower resistance than others.

Hello ..I don't want to hi-jack this thread but I am trying to build a shore cord, which didn't come with my unit. I think I understand what female plug to use but not sure if the male end is a Stove Plug or something else. I assume we use #6 Wire as well?

Sorry I am new to the forum..Greg

I had an additional plug added to the front of my Monty so I could plug in the generator I carry in the bed of my truck. It is too heavy to remove. I love it. It is just so handy to use. I would recommend it to all Monty owners. Now it makes no difference where the shore cord is, I can reach it easily.
