Cutting Ceiling AC Round Vent Fins
To those of you who have cut out every other fin on your AC discharge vents to increase air flow - can I ask what you used to perform this mod? Dremel? Box knife? Saw?
I am thinking the Dremel would make sense. The reason I’m asking is because any mods I do I prefer that when all is said and done things look as stock.
We are in south Florida full time in our 2018.5 3791RD and the two AC units do a great job of keeping us comfortable even with the t-stats set at 79 or 80 (also we turn the 4 vents in the kitchen directly at the ceiling fan), but more air flow is a good thing never the less.
P.S. out ducts are not collapsed at the air intake (return). The factory was proactive and placed block spacers in those ducts on our unit.
Thanks

I only mod'd one vent this way to see what I thought. I used an exact knive. Wife was not thrilled with the new look.

I only did the 2 in the bedroom also and didn't care for the look either. Used an Exacto knife too.

Razor knife on the fins, hack saw to shorten the vent pipe so it no longer obstructs the duct work.

box cutter. The soft plastic fins cut real easy.

Exacto knife on the vent registers. Dremel for reducing the register ducts to 1/4" above the duct insulation (was 1" above).
If you use a borescope to look down the duct work, I saw some of mine were compressed. I still have to figure out a way to open them up to their normal height. Maybe insert some vinyl J channel flat, then turn it up vertically?

No matter what you use you can’t go wrong even if you mangle it. A new is just $5.

I've just removed all the grilles as opposed to cutting them.

vinyl channel. Now why didn't think of that. Brilliant idea! Let me know if you see any at a big box store and where it was located.

I purchased my vents from www.dwincorp.com. They offer regular size vents and oversized ones. Personally I used the larger “Spaceport” vents with great results.

Just ordered and installed the vents that 2 yoopers just recommended. Installing them is a little work, but worth it. I took out one of the 5" vents and cut around the bottom edge where the screw holes are and used that as a template to mark where to cut. BE REALLY careful of wires around the vent holes. Pull off the tape to check for them. ALSO check where the old vent holes are, as mine were NOT all centered on the duct. I just used a plain old jig saw to cut them. Saw in one hand vacuum wand in the other. Took maybe 2 hours to complete job and remove finger prints from ceiling!!

Like 2Yoopers, we went with vents from dwincorp. We ordered the Jetstream 8850's as they fit in the same hole as the old ones on our 3150. No hacking away at vent louvers and they flow way more that the OEM ones. They swivel 360 and open about 45 degrees.

We purchased them from a Keystone dealer In Nebraska at a MOC rally but we have seen them at various dealers.

I was fixing to order the 8850’s you suggested. They are asking collar extension length 1 1/2, 1 1/8, or 7/8? Which one do I choose?

The duct is not very thick, we are using 1 1/4” tubing to hold it open from collapsing. I went with the 7/8” ones and they worked perfect. I used the aluminum tape around the seam between the duct and ceiling because the factory job was shoddy.

7/8" for ours as well. Otherwise they stick up inside the duct and you end up trimming them for more air flow.

I'm definitely going to do this. I've also heard of folks adding a few extra registers to the ducts. Again increased airflow. (Also done with cold-air returns.) Anyone have any positive effect by adding additional registers?
I have purchased 4 more cold-air return ports, but I'm twitchy about cutting holes in the ceiling. Is this just a simple pilot hole, then jigsaw, then aluminum tape process?
