Ford 6.0 Diesel

My 2006 Ford F-250 4X4 diesel had the injectors fail at 79,000 miles. The repair cost my $3,400. Even though our guarantee had gone beyond the time limit, the engine is guaranteed for 100,000 miles. I wrote to Ford and asked for them to pay half the repair bill, Ford offered to pay nothing. My next truck will not be a Ford.

My '04 6.0L failed at 58K with a blown piston and aluminum all through the engine. After the battle with Ford, I paid $8000 for a new engine. That engine ran for 52,000 and then had 7 injectors go out. I had a dealer replace 2 of them so the truck was driveable. Then drove across the street to a Dodge dealer and went home with a new Ram 3500 Dually.

I like the way Fords are appointed and how they drive. But, the way that Ford stands behind their customers drove me to Dodge. Now, we love the Dodge.

I guess I'm not alone, with Fords that don't work well. Hope the 6.0 will go for a while, a new truck isn't in the cards right now. Lasater, I was AF also 1962 - 1966, Wiesbaden Germany.

Many warranty problems and remedies are only as good as the Dealer representing you. Here in the Northwest we have good ones and bad ones (that is Dealers). If I have to use the Dealer I prefer to talk to the Owner and then the Service Manager to attain my confidence in technical application.

I feel your pain. Driving uphill towing my Montana 3500 RL, with my 2003 Ford F-350 extended cab 6.0 deisel, I had 4 fuel injectors go out, fuel pump and found chrome and metal shavings in oil filter. $3800 later, that weekend drove it to Washington , 6 days later engine light came on, and found two cracked exhaust manifolds for another $1200 encluding the powerstroke blower hose coming disengaged. Contacted warranty comp[any and they said, if I couldn't show machanic maintance for truck, to bad Charlie. When I bought the warranty, I was told to show all my maintance reciepts and records of work done. Nope, it was not done by a recognized shop. So, add another 2 grand I think to that for a $7,000 experience. If and when you get any injectors replaced, tell them you want to latest series for the engine. It will have a letter for the series reference. A year and half later, no lights, keeping my fingers crossed. Good luck to you.

Very interesting when I see these prices charged for repair. New injectors for a 6 liter cost $ 175 to 189 each, a seal kit costs $75 and a Glow plug kit costs $75. Total sum of parts are; say $1590.
Misc may be $200 and labor is not that complicated. So for $2000 to $2500 you have new injectors, seals and glow plugs installed.
Just my 2 cents for comparing to what some Shops charge ( here they want $140 to 170 per hour) or simply food for thought.

My point is the injectors are coverd by Warranty and he said Ford would not cover them . Is there more to that story. We have not had a problem with our 08 6.4..

Thank God I have two 7.3's, one 3/4 ton and one 1 ton, and havent have a bit of problems! It sucks that Ford released such trash with the 6.0 and won't stand behind them.. Friends with 7.3 are getting great reliability and life out of theirs. The friends with 6.0's are going crazy. Watch the you tube videos about the 6.0's and the 7.3's differences. The engineers (european) of the 6.0 should be ashamed!

I know of a few with the 6.7 diesel and the are having good results so far..

Good Luck!

I had to change 2 injectors last winter and ever since then it has been running great. I also changed the fuel filters and they were pretty bad. That was the second time I’ve changed them. I plan to start changing them about every other oil change. I’m not certain but I believe with clean filters, the injectors may hold up better.

It depends on time and mileage with Ford, we have seen many a vehicle that comes in under mileage but over on their time. (aka warranty start date)

6.0L was first to be required to comply with EGR mandate by government...I've change 2 injectors...hindsight suggests;
1. Use ONLY Ford fuel filters, change at Ford recommended interval
2. Install the blue spring fuel pressure update (increases fuel pressure)
3. Consider using full synthetic diesel compliant motor oil (improves cold weather starts)
4. Use centane fuel additive on each fuel fill
5. Stay with known volume gas stations for diesel refueling
6. Once a month, drive it like you stole it, to keep EGR clear
7. Regular maintenance is essential...
8. Monitor engine performance; ECT, EOT, TFT, and BST...EOT>ECT by more than 15 deg when cursing 65mph flat road, Oil cooler needs replacement due to build up of silicates

JMHO from following many threads on various forums

There are 161 things on a 6.0 engine that can go wrong. Where they have to pull the cab off to fix it. The new ford there are only 12 reasons to take the cab off. Ford designed the new engine with that in mind. That is part of the reason for the expense of labor on the old engines. Of course most of us did not know this when we bought our trucks. Ford did not advertise this. They new we would never have bought the truck. I am sorry I did.

Hi Rich,
The truck was purchased 6 years ago so it was out of warranty, even though it only had 79,000 miles on it. I sure hope you have better service out of your Ford than I have had.

Wheel House,
I thought my story was the worst yet, no chance. I hope your rig keeps going without any more problems. It appears the extended warranty can be a scam, the small print gets you every time. Adding to my pain, I had my check engine light come on. It needs a new FICM (fuel injector control module). The mechanic was really nice and sold it to me wholesale and didn't charge labor for the R&R. Injectors replacement cost $3,409 plus the FICM $383 = $3,792. No More Fords for me.

So, the truck is out of warranty??? Why would Ford, or any brand, want to pay for repairs for a vehicle out of warranty?

C/M,
It isn't uncommon for manufacters to go past the warranty date when requested. I asked for half of the cost of repair even though it was over the time period. Because it was under the warranty milage. A friend of mine has a Dodge one ton, the transmission went out and Dodge paid half of the repairs, even though he was over the time & milage. That's a good way to keep a customer.
