water heater question

2 times over the last week, we hear a loud noise, as if someone has hit the side of the monty, and then notice our water heater has shut off. It will go back on with no problem after pushing the button. Any suggestions as to what is happening? Jackie

Sounds like the infamous Hot Water heater check valve going out. Need to get a new one and replace it. See the pictorial that Ozz did on the steps to change the valve out.

That loud?? WOW, when ours went, I was sitting next to it, well, 4 foot away. I heard a click, but, I have to say, it was not loud.

(I have a bit of hearing loss, as I am, well, a bit older, snicker, but, I don't think I have that much of a loss, that is my disclaimer!)

The check valve will shut off the flow of hot water when it goes out but how does it shut off the heating unit? Am I missing something or misunderstanding?

Kroencke, I don't know which model you have so don't know if you can pull an outside cover and get to the burner or not. I am not sure what would cause the symptoms you hear/see but maybe something there will be obvious? Other than that I'm at a loss.
