Alternator
2006 F250 with towing package with 43K miles. The battery warning light has been flickering the past few days. Battery fluid levels are fine, terminals clean and tight. Could the hot weather combined with towing, playing XM, charging cell phone, etc be wearing down the battery or the alternator?? We dropped it off this evening at the Ford dealership to have them check the charging system. Hopefully just a loose wire somewhere along the line but wanted to get it checked out before towing again. Anyone else experience this type problem??

Fernsco,
On ours it was the alternator. Changed it out and all has been well since. I don't remember the mileage but probably around 30K.

Fernsco,
I do not remember, sorry. But I don't think it was smelling salts territory.
Funny I can remember taking the old one in and getting the new one but don't remember the $$$. Maybe it was so high I blocked it out of my memory.
One nice thing is that they are easy to get in and out. Remember that mine is an older 7.3 and they have a lot of space around the engine. The new ones are jam packed so might not be as easy. Of course if you're having it done it doesn't matter as much.
Since we did it ourselves it must have been over the 36K.
Good luck.

It sounds like a diode in the alternator died. New ones are not cheap any more do not install an off brand one though, unless you know it it reliable. If you aree constantly trying to charge weak batteries, that will kill an alternator. Tim

As Tim mentioned, don't buy a cheap alternator. I have a friend who purchased one from Auto Z. for his F-250..after a short time it caught on fire.

I agree. Don't buy and off-brand. Got taken by a parts store and off-brand alternator. Had it in one day and it failed. Got my money back for the alternator but not the labor to install it. Went to Ford dealer and got a Ford part. Worth the money!

Yes, we turned it into our Ford dealership and unfortunately it was the alternator. I pick it up this afternoon and will test run in the next two days before heading out with the rig this weekend. Thanks again to all!

Fernsco,
So did you have to use the smelling salts?
Glad you found the problem so quickly.

Yes, I had to pull out the smelling salts! Friends say I should have done the repair myself, but I was not positive it was the alternator.

fernsco,
Was it less than $300. My son bought one for a Mustang and it was around $250.
