I wouldn't trust the dealers we have here with my oil any longer. We purchased a new Solstice GXP sports car that had stamped right on the oil filler cap to use only Mobil 1 oil and my wife took the car in for a complimentary oil change for the first year and I discovered that they put the cheapest Pennzoil and never changed the filter even once! They denied it when I asked them but the invoices that I had said Pennzoil and that the car didn't have a filter. I now change oil myself and use Mobil 1 and they do have a filter that is easy to change they just couldn't find it. Now I know my oil is changed properly.

As Steve pointed out there is there is less friction with synthetic oil. When I switched the best I could tell there was about a 1/2 mile increase in my mileage. If you are paying $3.75 par gallon and getting 14 MPG you will save about $9 par 1000 miles. Pulling your camper getting 10 MPG you save $17 per 1000 miles. If you only save half of that the synthetic oil is much cheaper than you thought.

In my option synthetic oil is better for wear and tear on the engine. But is will never save you any money. I can not see any improvement on MPG, or pulling power, but the oil is not near as dirty looking when I change it every 5,000 miles.

I will continue to use synthetic just because it will with stand more heat, but I have never been that hot to worry about it.

Had this discussion with a friend yesterday. Dodge dealer and mechanic friend told him, don't care what oil you use but change it regularly and atleast once a year. His turck is 4-5 years old and very low mileage since he mainly uses it for towing the camper in the summer, mostly short trips.
