Hauling Bicycle Issue Again

I finally put a 4-sale sign on my fold up bicycle from CW and put it in front of the Monte this morning. It took less than 2 hours to get rid of it. It took me less than 2 more hours to purchase a full size 26" bicycle that I won't look like a buffalo riding a skate board on! Of course in all my excitement I kind of forgot that I have to haul that thing back to central Illinois in April. What I plan to do is put some old towels on the king bed and just lay it there while traveling. With the new 3725 model's wide hallway it will be easy to take into the bedroom. Any thoughts on the bicycle possibly bouncing over the hitting the glass closet doors? I would think the Monte would have to be bouncing pretty good for that to happen.

JandC, you have the same problem we are up against now with our new 37 and a quarter. The older 3400 had a hitch on it, so we got a bike rack for the hitch. Not so with the 3725...no hitch. So, what to do??? Way back when, with the first 3400 that had no hitch, I did carry the bike on our bed, with towels under it. The DW did NOT like that much at all. Plus, in spite of best attempts, you still hit something, no matter what. I'm looking at two possibilities, one is carrying it in the entry way, strapped down. The other is having a receiver hitch installed on the front of the pickup, as some have done, and mounting the bike rack there, also as some have done. Still debating.

I would not have any problem with bouncing but a panic stop is different. I would strap it down for the panic stop. I did one again today.

JandC, have you ever heard of the "Registers Great Bike Ride Across Iowa" RAGBRAI, before? Well, it's a bike ride from the Missouri River to the Mississippi River going across Iowa. Generally it's approx 450 -500 miles and starts on a Sunday and ends the following Saturday (last full week of July). Well, my DW rides in it along with another couple and I supply the support vehicle (the Monty). Anyway, short story long, when we go to Western Iowa to start we put two bikes (sprockets up) on the bed and lean one against the couch. Use old blankets, because the sprocket grease is permanent when it gets on fabrics. Anyway, bikes ride fine on the bed, roads aren't always very good but no problems after three years of going on RAGBRAI. I'm looking at a Blue Ox SC9000 Receiver Hitch for the Monty this year.

I carried two 26" bikes in the bed of the truck several years. Had the quick remove front wheels. I could remove the front wheels and the two bikes (and wheels) would easily lay in the bed in front of the hitch. But mine is a long bed, don't know what you have.
Worked OK, but got tired of doing it that way taking the wheels off and putting them back on. So I built a pin box mounted receiver to hang a bike rack on the front of the trailer. Works much better for me. Easy on/easy off. Don't have to worry about putting them inside. Don't have to worry about the bouncing on a rear hitch. And did not want a front hitch on the truck.

Install the front receiver hitch and get a bike rack, then you can use the front receiver for other uses. Or get a flat cargo rack and mount the bikes on the flat basket type rack and use it for other things to. We haul the bikes this way. Easy on the old back and secure.

Joe, I've been working the same issue as we have a pair of mountain bikes. With the SOB I did put them inside initially, but the DW HATED them on the bed, and they did make a bit of a mess. I did strap them down. I then tried a bumper hitch on the sewer tube in back, but the Yakima rack almost destroyed them bouncing around. I went out and bought a Thule platform bike rack and it solved all the problems with trashing the bikes. Easy on, easy off with no issues, and locks the bikes in place while we're out and about. Very easy to move to the truck if we go out for a longer ride too.

SO, yes, you can put them on the bed, but strap them down as others have said. The better option I think , is to install the rear hitch receiver and get a platform bike rack. http://www.amazon.com/Thule-990XT-Do...=cm_cr_pr_pb_t. There are even bolt on receivers that others have mentioned on the forum.

We hauled two twenty six in bikes on a ladder rack sold by CW. We never had a problem, except we got too old to ride them and sold them. It cost about $40.

Thanks for suggestions. I wish I could remove a bike wheel and keep one or two bikes in the bed of the truck. I have set my truck bed up with front rail-high tool box in front of the 5th wheel and V-shaped matching tool box at the rear with tailgate removed, so with my 6.5 bed there is not much cargo space. I may check into a bolt on rear receiver hitch for the Monte. That would also let us have a easy way to transport the bikes by truck while camped in one place for extended periods.

The carrier attached to the ladder from Camping World works pretty good. Extra bunges to stop the flopping and bouncing is a great help.

That would make a pretty good option since I would only put one light weight bike back there, except I now have a light duty 8' step ladder (weighs 28 pounds) that I have to keep strapped on there. My Mission In Life is to wax the new Montana twice a year in an attempt to get as many years as possible out of these decals, and to accomplish those wax jobs I need a 8' step ladder with me. The roof rack would work, but like MDL said that is a long way up there.

We have the same rack as MDL and the hitch on the rear of the Monty and it works great.

Thanks for the link. That is the one I would use if I decided on the rear hitch addition. I would just have to come to terms with the added worry about warranty issues if they come up.

Fauch, That is the one I put on. I then added a 2 inch square tube back to the cross frame in front of the tank. Its made to remove if I need to drop the tank. I had to cut a notch in the bracket that fits to the frame in order to keep it further back.

Hey JP, how did you connect/attach the square tube extension to the cross frame (on both ends)?
I had built the hitch on my 06. extension was part of the welded construction. I would like to use the Curt adjustable hitch, if i can 'engineer' the same improvements that i had in the one i built.
