Chesapeake Bay Bridge

Will be leaving for Florida next week heading south on 301 thru Delaware to the Chesapeake bay Bridge.
Called the bridge number and they stated the max height allowed is 13’ 6”.Our 2018 Montana 3731 max height is 13’5”.Going to check for sure but leary of going thru the tunnel. I’am assuming the tunnel height is higher but all they would tell me is all the state will allow is 13’6”.
Anyone been thru the tunnel with a rv at 13’5”? I know truckers go thru there all the time but better safe then sorry.

easy trip

I`m 13`5 been thru tunnel and over the bridge many times no issues except on the way to Nags Head this year we got stuck at the toll station for high winds. Ended up dropping the camper (allowed) and went back to the first nice restaurant to eat dinner.

13`6" is a Federal Standard... Although there are states that may allow higher units, most all bridges on U.S. and Interstate highways will be over the standard of 13`6" for clearance.

State highway bridges may be lower in some places, always pay attention to signage as you travel.

Also get a good (laminated) Rand McNally truckers atlas, it lists all the low clearances on State,U.S. and Interstate highways. It will have that info in the back listed by individual state, and also lists other restrictions that might be in effect at time of being published.

Truck suspension, hitch, pinbox any number of things can make your rig different from the factory specs.
Measure your rig accurately or accept the consequences. This is not something you can determine with a poll of other owners.

I agree and intend to measure for sure.

NO PROPANE tanks allowed to travel through the tunnels. You are not allowed to go through the tunnel. There is a big sign right before you get to close to the enterence telling you that!!!!. How are you going through? Would love to know. I have to take the 495 N around Baltamore and Washington. Only correct way to go!. Am i wrong? I am confused? Please let me know how you are doing this. The hight of the Bridge is only 13'6"?.

This is what they say about the Baltimore tunnels

Why can't I take my RV or camper through either the Baltimore Harbor or the Fort McHenry Tunnels?
Regulations govern the transportation of certain hazardous materials across our toll facilities. Under these regulations, vehicles carrying bottled propane gas in excess of 10 pounds per container (maximum of 10 containers), bulk gasoline, explosives, significant amounts of radioactive materials, and other hazardous materials are prohibited from using the Fort McHenry Tunnel (I-95) or the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (I-895). The Francis Scott Key Bridge (I-695) is a convenient alternative route for crossing Baltimore's harbor.

WE go thru the Chesapeake Bay tunnel all the time to Nags Head they just ask you if your tanks are turned off. The hazard with this tunnel is how narrow the lanes seem in the tunnel , both hands on the wheel and no distractions. Wife just closes her eyes till we are out. Trucks riding the center line is just a little unnerving.

Going the bay bridge tunnel you will probably need to stop to make sure your propane tanks are turned off. By all means do stop if you don’t they don’t mind a bit stopping ALL traffic to check you. That happened to my nephew. He was in the wrong lane and didn’t stop. They stopped all traffic to check him.

We had that happen, in the wrong lane on the 664 tunnel from Newport News to Chesapeake, and yes they stopped all traffic and directed us to the side. When the checked us, said it was "No big deal" happens all the time.
Very common with most tunnel, RV Propane is fine, just have to have the valves turned off.

Not saying its right but, We traveled through that bridge/tunnel last October with the fridge on propane and were never asked a thing about it. After getting through it I now understand why you should have it turned off. Traffic, specifically tractor trailers are coming at you at 55mph on a one lane road each direction road in a tunnel. However, if there was a head on collision, it could be real ugly with or without it on.

I have a 3791RD 13"5" pulling with a 2017 F350 DRW. I have been through the tunnels twice with no problems. Heading south you will first come to the Chesapeake channel tunnel. Slow to 40-45 as there is a hump at the entrance. Get through the tunnel, its tight. next comes the Thimble Shoals channel tunnel, same gig about slowing down. One other note is call ahead about wind restrictions. If it is windy 20-25 MPH or above it may shut down to trailer traffic.

I have been through the CBBT many times. My 5-er is 13'2", and I've seen many tractor-trailer trucks going through. They always ask me at the toll booth if my propane tanks are shut off and I usually stop (on the side) to make sure they are. It is narrow and there's not much room to spare if you meet a big truck coming the other way in one of the tunnels. I just keep both hands on the wheel and take it slow when I need to!

I appreciate the heads up going thru the tunnels and your height being ok.
Thanks a lot.

We live in Virginia Beach, right at the start of the Chesapeake Bay bridge tunnel. Our fiver is 13'-2" and no issues going through. Most fivers up to 13'-5" will not be stopped from going through.

As everyone is saying earlier, the propane tanks are required to be turned off for the trip across the bridge. Many times they will ask but not actually check them.

If anyone is too tall, you will be flagged by an overhead monitoring system and you will be turned around. I've heard of people letting air out of their airbags just to meet the max height.

Thanks to everybody about the tunnel heights, narrow one lane roads, wind speed alerts & propane tanks off. We've planned a trip from FL to Maine in the future. Our plan was to take the Chesapeake tunnel & Baltimore tunnel, etc. I'll have re-do our directions around these tunnels.

We called Chesapeake Bay Bridge info number this morning at 7am before leaving NJ for Fla.
They told us gusts of wind 39mph and pouring rain???
No thanks. We are taking 95 S all the way.I would advise calling before leaving that day for the bridge.

When asking advice on driving through places with tight clearances and weather sensitive places, and folks state I do that all the time. I think a poll may be in order.

Q. Have or would you bungee jump?
Q. Have or would you Jump out of a perfectly good airplane?
Q. In the last 6 months has someone accused you for being crazy because of something you have done? If so how many times?

Based on the answers you can determine if your comfort level is the same as theirs.

Full disclosure: In a past life I have done vertical caving (longest rappel 300'), I have also done high incline, cave and mine rescues, and was a volunteer firefighter.

Seriously though, there is a lot of good info on this thread.
