MICHLIEN TIRE REPLACEMENTS

My 2008 RAM needs new tires. The factory tires are
Michlien LTX A/S LT 265/70 R17 E.

Apparently Michlien no longer makes these tires & have replaced them with LTX M/S2 LT 265/70 R17 E.

Does anyone have any experience with the M/S2 tires ?? They're warrenty for 70,000 miles which means I should get 80,000+ out of them.

We spend the winters in Arizona so I don't need a mud & snow tire but it seems this is all Michlien has right now. I only want Michlien tires. Have them on all of my cars & trucks.

I run 265/75 16 MS2 on my duramax and 235/85 16 on Monty. Have run them for years and love them. Just be sure to rotate them reguarly, and front alligned.

I have the MS2 also. No problems just a hard ride like all Michliens.

So that's not my imagination! The new truck came with them and I thought maybe GM changed the suspension. Even airing the tires down didn't help. Still, if I get the mileage out of them, I can live with the ride.

Sadly, my Michelin LTX 265/70 17 M&S/2 are wearing very poorly. It looks like I'll be lucky to get 30k out of them.
I watch inflation very carefully adjusting for load and tire position, rotate the tires and get the truck aligned as needed.
Needless to say, I'm very disappointed in them and will not be buying them again.
I paid over $1000 for 4 installed & balanced. What a waste of money.

I'm running the M/S2 on my dually and so far I'm very happy with them and seem to be wearing well. M/S stands for multi surface, not mud and snow. I was corrected at the tire shop.

How could CORATTLER (above) be having such terrible wearing problems with his Michlien tires ??

Everyone else seems to get good tire wear from them. Confusing.

I've had three (3) Acura's in addition to the RAM I have. All four (4) vehicles came with Michliens & I have always exceeded the miles warrenty on the tires with tread to spare on the tires.

That's why I replace tires with Michliens.

I wish I knew why they are wearing so fast... I would correct it.
What I do know is that I can't afford to be replacing 70,000 mile tires at 30,000 after I paid over $1,000 for them.
It is puzzling but I'm not making this up.

Jay ... when you get your truck aligned ... are they doing a 4 wheel alignment or just the 2 front wheels? Your front wheels can be in alignment yet you can have a rear spring bolt broken making the truck dog track.

I had the same issue with wear and was never happy with the ride. It was always a very hard ride. The centers wore great but the inside and outside tread was down to the wear bars after 36k miles. Showed them to my tire dealer. He knows my habits on rotation and pressure. When I told him about how hard they have always been he suggested sometimes, despite quality control, the rubber compound just comes out too hard. We filed a claim with Michelin and they gave me 60% off on a new set. $480 out the door. That seemed very fair to me as I have always been a Michelin fan and didn't want to avoid them due to one bad experience. The ride on these new tires is a marked difference. Jay, If I were you I'd call and make a claim with Michelin. Per the dealer, who sells all brands of tires, Michelin works very hard to satisfy their customers. Jim

I spoke with the tire dept representative at Costco where I bought the tires and he said that since the wear wasn't even all the way across, Michelin would NOT honor the mileage warranty. The wear is exactly as you described.
He did say that Costco would initiate an in store warranty and submit a claim to Michelin for reimbursement of what they paid me.
I would be open to another set but I am understandably leery.
Thanks for the feedback and advice.

Jay,I didn't explain this very well but the first thing my tire guy had me do was call Michelin and open up a claim. He feels they are more responsive when they hear direct from the customer. The young lady I talked to was very pleasant, knowledageable, and apologetic for the problems. She issued the claim number. Michelin then had me take the tire to a certified dealer, which my guy happened to be, for wear measurements. Once he gave them the measurements they made the 60% off offer via him. If I did not accept that offer I was to call Michelin direct to negotiate but I thought it was more than fair so I accepted. I guess this is just a long way of saying I would call Michelin myself. Good luck, Jim

Jim,
Thanks for the clarification. Did you wait until the tires needed replacement or file the claim when they began to show unreasonable wear?
Jay

I get a 4 wheel alignment.
What do you mean by "dog track"?
I did hit a deep pothole about 1 month ago with the passenger side rear tire. I got under the truck and looked closely for damage but found nothing. Since then I am hearing what sounds like a "popping" in the front end when the weight shifts (like in a turn in either direction). I checked the front end and all looks solid. I even had my trusted mechanic look at the whole underside but nothing was found. There is no shimmy or shake to the front end. I can't understand how the two could be related.

Larry-P: I apologize if I'm hijacking your post.

I filed it the day before the tires were replaced.

I would question your tire shop:

Even Michelin says M/S is Mud & Snow:

My last set of tires were M/S 2's. At 45k I did not feel safe to take a long trip towing the trailer. My choice. If I had been driving around town with no trailer maybe I would have gone for more miles before replacement. I had no problems with the M/S 2's just did not get the mileage I expected. When contacted Mich. did give me a credit towards new tires. I will try the new ones and hope for better mileage numbers before replacement.
