I'm 52, would I really be excluded at 55+ Parks?

Hi Forum,

I'm 52 with my AARP card and wondering how the 55+ "rule" is really applied.

Is that just for people staying for long stretches? Are they just trying to make sure that young children will not be in the park? Do they "card" you when you arrive?

We are empty-nesters and will not have any children with us. Even our Yorkie is a senior citizen.

I do not wish to break the rules but am wondering how this guideline is actually applied and enforced.

Thank you.

I would say it is ask forgiveness and not permission. I think the no children is a key part.
Let us know what you find.

Ha! Good answers. I just wondered if parks "carded" people ever or how that worked. My wife was assuming that the 55+ thing had to do with long-term living or purchasing property there, but we have no real frame of reference. Thank you.

I called a place in Palm Springs, CA and they strictly enforce the age 55. I inquired because I am 53. I think John Kohl has the answer!

I would guess they have two objectives; keep out children and keep out younger adults who may be more likely to drink and/or party to excess.
As far as checking your ID, it will probably depend on their first impression when walk up to the check in counter. Often difficult to tell a person's age within a few years accuracy.

Some parks we've stayed at have asked for a Driver's License as ID when checking in, could be rather embarrassing.

It depends on the parks....some enforce some do not. We have found that for short term week or less they tend to forgive, but monthly for a season they enforce. We found a park south of Palm Springs along the salton Sea they enforce for purchase but allow all ages for any length for seasonal stays. We love our winter home....stay for 6-7 months and never a question of age. Name of the park is Fountain of Youth.....and very a park with a heavy population over 65 they sure are active.

We have found some enforce, some do not. Usually for a couple, where enforced, only one has to be 55+

True words however we no longer are concerned with 55+ issues. One small advantage among larger disadvantages.

Does a 55+ yo have greener money than a 52-54 yo?

Pineranch, you are correct when you say (paraphrasing) that "The way you do anything is the way you do everything." I am not looking to cheat the system, I was just wondering what the true intent is of the 55+ guideline and how all encompassing it is. I am a member of a couple of clubs and was not going to buy anywhere for right now and have had some 55+ places market to me. Thank you for everyone's input.

I wouldn't worry about it Brett. I think if you were booking for a 3 month stay at a RV resort that restricted the age to 55 and over they could possibly question you, but other than that I wouldn't think it would be an issue. I am sure I look older but we have stayed at 55 and older places and they have never asked for proof of age nor have I heard of them asking anyone. If you stay at a RV park that only wants 55 and older and you are 52 I sure don't consider that "cheating" anyone. You still pay the same price as everyone else.

The real intent, in my opinion, of the 55+ parks is to exclude children. Most have rules for how long grandchildren are allowed to visit.
