Reason for Registering Electronics

I received an email this morning from Garmin regarding a GPS unit that had been stolen from my truck. They indicated that someone had contacted them about a unit registered to me. The individual indicated that he had purchased the item from a pawn shop and Garmin wanted to know if I had pawned the unit. I emailed Garmin and told them the unit had been stolen. They indicated that they would annotate my registration. I also called the police and provided this information to them. I'm not sure where this is going to go yet, (police may follow up on this) but if it helps to take a crook off the street it will be a good thing.

...and be expecting company shortly...

Normally I dislike people knowing what I have or what I do, but this story I like.

Great!
I have engraved my driver's license number on all valuable possessions, using an engraver available on a free loan from my (and most) police department.
It will help regain stolen merchandise and also help identify the criminal caught possessing it.

30 years ago we were told to engrave our social security number on everything - . I STILL have tools, equipment, even electronics with my social security number - hahahaha - Theft from me would be a double bonus now- material theft AND identify theft

Good to know, and speaks well of Garmin's customer service. Portable GPS units are very popular theft items. I'm much more careful these days about moving my unit out of sight. or securing.

Garmin does a good job of making it difficult for you to transfer the mapping software (specifically MapSource) from one unit to another. Their registration is very good, and I appreciate their diligence in keeping software legal, and hardware registered.

That's good to know about Garmin. I like companies that are responsive to their customers.

I just received another e mail from Garmin with surprising news. They indicated that they had recovered the unit stolen from me and after looking it over to make sure it was working properly, they would then return it to me.

I have been very pleased with their products and based upon this I will heartily recommend Garmin to anyone wanting a GPS product in the future.

Good to hear you will be getting the unit back. Also gives you the idea there is some things you don't want to purchase from a pawn shop.
As bsmeaton has said, I wonder how many different items I've lost, sold or maybe just can't remember where I put them that had my ss# ingraved on them!
By the way, there is some great sales going on now till Christmas on Garmins.
