Pricing new trucks....or cars
Probably old news to many of you, but if you want to do some groundwork before going to the dealership, try Edmond's.
I got a quote from my Ford dealer on an '08, for future reference.
Went through all the options on Ford's paperwork and got a price.
Edmond's has the same codes and option numbers. You have to be aware that some options come with a package, so don't list them if so.
I got the same numbers using the same option selection on my computer as the Ford dealership. The dealership had a $1,000 rebate that Edmond's did not show, as it was local, I think.
I would be looking at a $42,500 to $45,400 price, depending on my final choice of options. (I really like the 58-F Navigation with built in screen....)

Try Kelly Blue Book, too: www.kbb.com
We considered the on board nav system, but decided against it for two reasons...that bad boy is expensive, and the updates are so frequent we did not want an outdated on board nav system...assuming we'd keep the vehicle for a couple of years.

Is software available for updates? One would think it would be. I know the price is really high, you have to get the 6 Cd changer with it. I'm getting the Sat. radio as well. I figure with a $45K truck, what the hey...

I am with you on this one Ozz, that Navigation system, Sat radio and cd changer is one of the biggest reasons I got the 08, its some of the best money I have ever spent. As far as the upgrades there is a telephone number on the sign on screen but I have not called it so I do not know what is available. I do know that I like it 100% better than that laptop I was using with Delorme and that radio is awsome.

Ozz,
My '06 Dodge one-ton is the Laramie package with ALL the bells and whistles. Has the navigation system with 6 CD changer, AM/FM, satellite radio (Sirius), Cummins Diesel, sun roof, electric rear slide windows, leather seats, heated seats, electric windows, cruise, 8-way adjustable electric leather seats, center laptop console.
We paid close to $45K, and then dealer incentive took off about $3K and added the extended warranty, so think you are in the right price range.
......and then the add-ons, bed spray liner, bed cover, tool box, nerf bars, mud flaps, engine brake...it all adds up quickly!

Man, they are expensive, almost like buying a house. I built my home I am living in now, my construction loan was $45,000.
When I bought my new 1976 Chevy 3/4 ton...I still have; Old Yeller, it cost $7,000.

Ours uses a dvd and will only use a "correctly formatted" dvd. That implies updates are available. But Vicki's out shopping so I can't check the manual right now to see if it says where to get updates.
I still like my portable Garmin far better so about the only time I use the onboard is when we're out someplace and I want it to guide us home. I have "home" preprogrammed and I reset that every time we land in an rv park and plan to leave the park for awhile. I do the same on the Garmin.

Steve,
I have the same unit as you. The DVD can be updated, think it is about ~$150. I really like the GPS unit, it works well for us, and yes, the home feature is great for unfamiliar areas. Make sure you try the 'TRAIL" feature, it has brought us out of some tricky places.
We also use our laptop while towing, between the two, we can usually make rational decisions.

No gps for us, don't need the distraction and the $4.95 walmart works just fine for the wife and I to navigate by. As the old saying goes, "Ya get what ya pay for".
I chose to buya the LT# trim package with the Chevy and all the bells an whistles except for GPS, even have the dvd player in the back for visitors with little kid(s).

Ozz,
As a matter of fact we do. I had an old Garmin handheld (1.4Mb) that we still use for hiking. This unit also fits on our bicycle. It makes map reading real easy...The old Garmin is a pain, have to load the topographical maps at each location, but we have done it so many times now, that it is pretty easy...and very accurate.
For bicycling, it gives us the elevation, trip distance, map of the roads, topographical features, ...well, you get the idea.

I figured if anyone would have one, it would be you.
Hey, post a picture of your custom tandem on the Forum, I would like to see it, since we missed you that day at Havasu.

Ozz, just go ahead and get that new truck. All you have to do is install a few more roof top units.

Hmmm, I better dig out the manual. I remember the term, just don't recall what it does. I think it's point to point rather than by street.
I did use the onboard tonight, coming back from visiting my Mom. I have to drive clear across Kansas City on I-70/670 and hit it at rush hour. Traffic came to a crashing halt at the Benton curve (for those of you who know KC). I needed to get clear out to I435. I know how to get home by taking US 40 but am not familiar enough with KC to take a different exit and easily find my way home. I saw Van Brunt coming up, flipped on Gertie, told her to take me home. She said take I70. I said think again and exited onto Van Brunt and turned left. She recalculated and took me to 23rd, then east to Independence. Piece of cake and not much traffic on that route. Sweet.

Robbie, is the Nav system updateable by a USB port like Garmin or do you have to order the update SD card for it.

Leasit,
Not sure which you are talking about, so, I'll answer both.
The DVD in the truck is left in the NAV unit, no USB in the truck.
My old handheld is a Garmin GPS III+ (1997?)(only has ROM 1.4 Mb +surface maps. It sports a nice old dependable serial port...have to use an adapter with the new computer to go from serial to USB.......slow speed.
