Tire pressure information on the road again!

We made it to Guthrie Oklahoma today from K.C. Mo.
Yesterday afternoon, I filled the Montana tires to a 80# pressure on the nose.
Today, at a service area, I checked them, on the Sunny side of the Monte, they were 86#, on the shady side they were 80#
So, I adjusted the air pressures, 50 miles down the road, I checked them they were good.
Sooo, take into account Mr. Sunshine on your tire pressures.
I am keeping her under 65 MPH, so far, knock on wood, the Missions are doing well.
On to Denton Texas tomorrow.
Hot Dog, I love to travel in our Monte. Sue is happy as a Clam.
Later.

Ozz, when you check your tire pressures tomorrow morning, I fear you will find the sunnyside about 6 lbs low. A 6 lb increase in pressure due to heat from the sun or road isn't something I would worry about too much. The cold psi rating takes into account the increase in pressure due to conditions such as you described.

Carry on buddy, and be safe.

While on a ten week trip from Ca. to D.C., Ind, Mn. Mt,Nv, back to Ca. I checked the tire pressure every day before moving ,unless it was raining. I started out at sea level at 80#, it would vary up to 5#s upward, depending on altitude, and ambient temps. I checked them each morning before we got underway.I only added air to one tire, one time,,and when I got home, the next morning all tires wer at 75 #s. They were at 80 the morning before in Las Vegas.I checked them 27 out of the 30 times that it was moved. Bill

Two years ago at the Daytona Good Sam Rally, I attended a seminar conducted by RVSEF (Recreational Vehicle Safety Education Foundation) on tire safety. As you all know, correct tire pressure is the key to safely (assuming you are within your wight load range/tire capacity) keeping the tires cool.

FYI - One of the document distributed at the seminar states that as a general rule, tires should not be inflate higher than the pressure shown on the sidewall. However, the Tire and Rim Association standards permit increasing the pressure of Light Truck (LT) tires up to 10 psi over that shown on the sidewall. This does not increase the rating of the tire but helps it to run cooler.

There was no comments or documentation on ST tires so I don't know if the same 10 psi increase can be applied.

The Doran pressure monitor system comes in handy in keeping a constant check on tire pressures.. A push of a button and you have a reading at any time.

Rich, I had to laugh, I was double checking my pressures with my super duper digital gauge, it read 48# on my 80# tires...the battery was down, just like yours was. When you need it, no batteries. The reading turns Red when the battery is low. Looks pretty, but just a hunk of plastic right now. (I have my regular tire inflator and checker also.)
Lonnie, I went around last night and set all of them on 80#, right on the nose. I checked all wheels with my torque wrench as well.

Ozz, isn't it funny how the most sophisticated equipment becomes completely useless when a 2.00 battery decides to die? Good thing you have the old reliable manual stuff for a backup, .

Take care today, it's supposed to be pretty windy along your route. 30 mph sustained, with higher gusts.

Rich, those Doran systems are pretty neat items, saves a lot of worry.

Ozz,

Don't you have those tire pressure indicators on your valves? I am curious, what did they say?...were they below the % that shows the yellow indicator?

On our trip to Tennesse, 1200 miles, Bob only had to add air to our tires in Nashville on our way there. He checks our tires every morning before we leave with out fail rain or shine. We have had a blow out on the RV and one on the TV. Neither one is fun to deal with so he is very careful. Just a note though, he had checked the air pressure on the tires when he had the blow outs.

On the indicators, yes, they indicate. My poor old eyes have to really focus because if a little low, they just show a small section of Red. But my problem was over inflation....I thought.

I just got done with an ordeal with tires, will post it on another new thread.

Hey, Jim, if those tires on the shady side read 80 psi after a run, then those tires probably need more psi. After a run they should read higher than they do at cold. You want 80 psi cold in them.
