Propane, dual tank problem
We have dual tanks. When we switch to the door side tank we dont get propane inside the camper. An outdoor grill works fine. Sometimes the stove lights but the furnace wont produce heat. We switch back to ODS propane and we have furnace heat. We have put a new regulaoand switch valve on. Still no luck. Any suggestions? Thank you

Could be a collapsed hose from that one tank or the flow safety switch from that tank.
If it is the flow switch you will need to disconnect the tank and perhaps turn it upright, then reconnect the tank and open the valve really slow.

Thank you for your response but
It does not matter which tank we place on the Door Side. We get no heat when the tabk is connected on the door side.

Since you have already replaced the regulator and the switch valve it is probably the red regulator or the tank valve on the bad side. When requesting information here it is best to state the year and model of your Montana. Many of us put that information in our signature so it is always available.

I have a similar problem only mine is intermittant. If I apply a hairdryer to the red valve the problem seems to go away. Only happens when very cold 30 or lower. Is the red valve needed?

Actually the Red Regulator was not needed until a few years ago due to changes in rules. If you remove the Red Regulator and re-hook-up the lines you may find that everything works as it should, then you will know for sure if Red Regulator is the problem. Just an idea.

Then it could be the red regulator or it could be that short flexible hose that connects the propane tank to propane pipe.

The flow restriction valves are not in the tank, but are in the pig tail hoses. It might be the valve in the hose is stuck closed and the pig tail needs to be replaced. We had a similar problem a couple years ago, and that was the problem. I just installed two new pig tails and have not had any issues since.

I just had that problem and it was the pigtail hose from the tank.

This is a good thread. I did not know the flow restrictor was in the pigtail. I had problems a while back getting an outdoor fireplace to function and it turned out I was opening the tank valve to quickly causing the restrictor to shut down. I know that not long ago that valve (red) was changed from a 18psi to a 30psi indicated by the model # stamped on it. I did not know the hose (pigtail could go bad, except for maybe a leak.

I had worked for a major propane company in Canada and the excess flow valve is built into the valve on the cylinder and not in the hose. Maybe it's different in the USA.

No, you're correct the excess flow valve is in the tank, but these crap pig tail hoses they're using seem to cause a reduced flow or totally stop the flow. You can read about them on just about every RV Forum.

The green Acme nut end on the pig tails have the excess flow valve inside, where the older left hand thread fitting for use on the older tanks did not have an excess flow valve. The only valve in the newer tanks is an OPD valve, which is a Overfill Protection Device, which prevents filling too much propane into a tank and not allowing room for the liquid propane to become gas. This is copied from the description of a pig tail on the Makarios site:
For connecting propane cylinder to RV or trailer propane regulator. Rated for 200,000 BTUs per hour. Safety features include thermal protection in case of fire and excess flow protection in case of broken gas line. Type 1 Acme nut x 1/4" inverted male flare.
