CA-49 From I-80 South Question

Hello there. Wife and I are taking our Savings account for a little trip next month. We are headed out of San Diego, CA up to Redding, CA the conventional way, over to Reno, NV via Susanville, CA and then West and South on I-80 and I-5. I want to take a detour to Placerville using CA-49 South off of I-80 and then on further South to CA-120 and then back West to I-5. I have a Birthday date in Paso Robles with my son sometime that week, but not carved in stone so the wife and I can just kind of Mosey on down the Road.

Question - has anyone pulled down that road? I have a 3295RK Montana ...... goes about ......... um ........ 36 feet and 12,000Lb that way it is loaded.

Any information somebody might have about that road would be appreciated. The alternative is to either cut over South of Reno and catch the 50 in Tahoe or all the way into Sacramento and back track on the 50.

as you leave auburn on 49 to a town called kool it is a bit on the snug side a couple of switch backs then it gets good till you get to the other side a bit snug there too I drive a Big truck delivering lumber out there and always come in from the hwy 50 side a logging truck would have no problem but my lumber truck takes a little more room on the corners If your not faint of heart and take your time its doable I would do it with my monty 3400 but then again I have seen the road before good luck with your choice 120 is a good road no problems there

Coming out of Placerville there is a good grade. Once up it the road is not bad. Some turns and a couple of good hairpins. Good part is getting to the Amdor City / Sutter Creek area. They have made a bypass there so it is much easier to get over to Jackson. From Jackson down to 120 the road is not bad. Alot of nice scenary to look at, pass a few lakes also.

As the others said not a really bad road just a little tight in places. If you are looking for a place to overnight there is a very good RV park/resort in Plymouth called Far Horizons 49er Village. Lots of trees and grass. We are going down there over Fathers Day weekend to do some wine tasting.

Thanks All! Good to hear all the stuff about that road. I was a bit worried. I read a post from someone that was on it but not sure where. It was not a great experience from what they said. Something about a sign that said no more that 30 foot trailers and they were at 36.

Again - Thanks!!

Second that on the 49er in Plymouth. It will be on your right hand side coming from Placerville. Just came back from there a week ago. One of my favorite places. If you need to stock up on groceries there is a store right across the street.
