No more burned food in the oven

Our oven (and all of our previous ovens) tends to burn food on the bottom. This may have been discussed before, but if not, here is our solution. With our 2010 Montana, we have a larger oven. For this oven, we bought a terracotta stone (11-1/2" x 11-1/2") and had it cut to 11" X 11-1/2". It drops down into the recess and fits perfectly. This keeps our food from burning. For larger items we can remove the shelf and put the pan directly on the stone. Notice we were careful not to cover the holes on the perimeter of the oven floor. Voila -- no burned food.

Icehouse, we're on the same page. We used a pizza stone for years until we hit some real big potholes and it broke.

CountryGuy found a square pizza stone on line somewhere a few years ago, it fits the same as as described here by footloose.

Yepper, sure makes for better baking.

Pam, to bake one MUST light that oven! Otherwise how can we expect those dropped brownie concoctions we came up with, mmmmm good, busted brownies, smothered with french vanilla ice cream, topped with chocolate and maybe even caramel sauce and of, course, some whipping cream and cherries.

Light that oven Pam! Time to bake and mmmmm, eerrr, drop and then drool!

We took your suggestion and bought one at Lowe's. Had it cut down and put it in the oven. All was good until a day or so ago when it cracked and split in to two pieces at a temperature of 400 degrees. Is there something else I should know, of do I just get another one and hope that it is better?

Wouldn't have been surprised if it broke during transit. Surprised it split at 400 degrees since they are usually fired at a much higher temp. I'd just leave the two split pieces in place. That's what we did for a couple of years with our split pizza stone.

Just a thought.....We done this in the past...take a cookie sheet with 1/2" sides & place it upside down on the bottom. It does stop the burning of food on the bottom.

Is that a terracotta floor tile that you are using in the oven or one of those stoneware baking stones?

If it's the floor tile...it's a whole lot cheaper than the baking stone!!!

Trercota stone is a great idea, we were lucky to find a pizza stone at a outlet store in our travels last year that was on a clarance sale, and we got it for less than 10.00. we havnt baked anything in the oven yet but we will soon winter is comming so its time to bake again, biskets, french fries, and prime rib. not at the same time either because it wont all fit.

Countrylady, it is terracotta tile. We really can't claim ownership on this idea -- Julia Child came up with it years ago for baking bread. I think the tile cost us less than $5 and the cutting was free.

We started using an unglazed terracotta stone purchased at Home Depot in our last rig and were very pleased with the results. We transfered it to the new rig and it cracked in transit, so I will be getting another soon and will cut this one to size. The stone fit perfectly in the recess of our last rig but was a little big for the new one. If I remember right the cost was less than $2.00.

We have had a Oven in all our 5th wheels until we were able to order the 2010. Delaine didn't care for our first Convection/Microwave and then she started using the Convection oven and then we had no use for the oven. The ovens were then used for storage, we deleted the oven this time and have drawers in it place. The Terracotta stone is a great idea for those who use the oven. You learn something every day on this forum. GBY................
