Got a new bike rack

Got a Saris Freedom 2 and assembled and installed it on the Monty today. http://www.amazon.com/Saris-Freedom-...ike+hitch+rack

Was easy to install, but a job to figure out how to load our bikes on it. I have a Townie which is a very weird road bike and Joyce has a standard women's road bike. It took several step back and think about it moments, but after reversing the middle clamp on mine we had them both secure tighter than they've ever been before. Looking forward to hauling them out west and giving it a real test.

I have the hanging style from Saris and am very happy with it. I had an older/original design from Saris and it wasn't holding the bike properly. I contacted them and provided photos. Saris replaced it with a current model. It cost me the amount to ship the old one back. I don't know too many companies with a lifetime warranty who actually stand behind their product!

My wife and I both have Townies and they transport just fine using a $65 Allen.

Yikes! Now that is a bike rack!
Should be secure down the bumpy roads we encounter.

Yes, and there's a plan for the future. Assuming money is more available next spring than currently, I'm putting a receiver hitch on the front of the truck. The bike rack will then move to the front of the truck and a generator rack will be built for the back of the Monty.

DQ Dick, is there any concern with the 1" square tubing with potential movement and whipping of the rack and bicycles? I purchased another brand and when my bikes were loaded the rack had quite of bit of movement side to side.

Could be, we'll find out. When we winter, Joyce follows me in the car so we'll know right away if that's a problem. Seems very sturdy at this point and left over from our other set up I have a padded set up for the handle bar on the closest bike to keep it off the rig and a pad for the ladder to keep the rear fender off the ladder, so it it is a problem we do have things that may fix it.

We have used a Saris bike rack for the past 5 years. I believe ours is a cousin to the one you got. I love the rack as it holds the bikes secure and I don't have to worry about them. Great choice. We have a cheaper one on our Jeep and it scares the crap out of me every time I use it.

Been from central Kansas to Lawrence, Kansas and then from Lawrence to Pittsburg, Kansas (basically from the center of Kansas to the North East and then down the eastern part of the state to the South East) mostly on back roads. Joyce followed me the whole way and says the bikes never moved. This is a good bike rack option.

Dick, you found a rare one, been hauling bikes all my life(raced em for years) and have never seen a 1" tubing with a plastic insert, and I assume a screw pin to tighten, that did rock side to side due to flex. I'd keep an eye on it, check at the curve for cracking in the powder coating, that is where they usually fail. The one inch tubing is not designed for long hauling, like you do. If you do have any issues, don't junk the rack, any welding shop can box a 2" for a replacement and that will last a life time.

True and a good point. Remember, however that the hitch on the Monty is made for the tubing on the bike rack, it's when I switch it to the truck that I have to use the insert and if a metal one is desired they do make it. And best of all the bike rack is guaranteed for life (mine, not it's) and the bike shop that recommended it has had some parts the company has replaced, mostly the plastic due to sun damage, but never the frame so far.
