Another wake up call...
We pulled into a quick stop for some diesel fuel yesterday. I didn’t even notice the clearance that was posted on the corner of the canopy. After I got out and started to get the fuel I noticed just how close it looked like we were to the canopy.
I recently measured the top of our camper after putting on a new A/C and came up with the figures of 12’10”. I decided anything 13’ or lower was simply too big of a risk to go under and then I would have to remain level. When I went and looked for the clearance height on the canopy it was showing 12’9”. The math was wrong somewhere because I didn’t hit anything. I was told by the attendant that it was lower on the other side than where we were at. I had two spotters when I pulled out and plenty of clearance.
Notice the diesel price.. 3.429
Whew, that was a close one! After we left I had to go underneath a bridge that had a posting of 13’9”, “no sweat!”

Lucky! But, I've been there too! I actually had to back away from a railroad bridge that was not labeled till I got to it. Label said 12 feet
I'm glad you missed.

Good thing you didn't pull to the far pump (like I always do).

We had a similar thing happen in Oklahoma. Clearance was close but ok then they hung security cameras from it. I saw them and avoided them, the guy with an SOB didn't and took one down and cracked his AC cover.

Thanks for the "reminder". I will be climbing on top of the trailer/5th wheel tonight to remove the cover and will bring a tape measure and straight-edge to see how tall our trailer is.

That was close and your were lucky! As they say, better lucky sometimes than good! We have a railroad bridge bridge nearby and the road dips down below the normal height of the road and the dealer that delivered our 1st rig said that they had stuck 2 campers under that same bridge. Two! How many times to figure that out? These were done by the same person. Go figure. Your picture is a good reminder for all of us. Sometimes roads get paved on the small town areas and they do not always re-post the new height. Good luck traveling Bill.

So I climbed on top of the trailer last night with a tape measure and it appears that from the top of the ac unit (which is at the back RV) my height is either 12'9" or 12'10"..... had no one at home to help remove the cover of the trailer and measure the height, but now I have a "benchmark" to go by.

Been there, done that also. A little closer to the pumps and you might not have been so lucky.

That's what I was thinking! So, are they smart enough to include the lowest point which are the lights, or is it the bottom of the canopy - guessing the canopy...

It’s hard to tell in the picture but it looked to me like some of the light covers had already been broken off. There was actually more clearance than how it looked in the photo but still very scary realizing it after the fact of pulling in.

Bill, glad you missed that one. That is why I always use Truck Stops when towing. I stay away from overhead covers.
