onan 5500 lp install

Does anyone have the onan 5500 lp generator installed in their Montana? This is a factory option. I have the genset prep option and plan to install a 5500 myself. I would really like to see some pictures of an installed unit, maybe one from the front and one from the bottom. Any help would be appreciated.

I have one, but it will be a couple of weeks before I can get pictures for you. If nobody else posts some pics by then, I will post them.

I have one which was transferred from my last SOB to my Montana. Camping World in San Marcos, CA did the work which I watched from start to finish. I'm not sure it's a job you'd want to tackle unless you're a trained professional and have all the little bits and pieces you'd need right at hand. The unit weighs about 280lbs. according to the Cummins/Onan guidebook. The job was a trial from start to finish but was done perfectly at a cost of around $900.

I'm not afraid of doing the install, it would just help to see some pics of a completed one. I can fabricate whatever structural support I need to and I also can do the electrical and plumbing. I would really like to see a view from the bottom to see how much of the bottom pan they cut out and if they added support. Thanks for the replies.

Mine sits in the far left side and the transfer switch is to the right of the generator. Originally the bottom wasn't cut away properly which caused overheating. The wires routed along the bottom or back was rerouted to go over the top of the bay. The exhaust is in a "Z" and exits out the drivers side just behind the BR slide. Never had problems with fumes and it works really well and very quiet. There is a shield between the end of the genset and the rest of the front storage bay with foam that seals against the door. I don't know how to post pictures here or I'd do that for you.

pappy65,

Here are the pics I took this morning:

Generator Bay with the Onan inside:

Here is the wiring installation to the battery compartment that connects to the battery for starting:

Some pics of the unit from beneath the rig, sorry if they are not clear enough, kind of hard to get pictures there:

Pic of the exhaust routing beneath the rig:

Pic of the exhaust as it appears from the side of the rig:

Hope this helps with what you are planning!

Bingo,
Thanks for the great pictures. I will be cutting out the area under generator and then I have made a deal with the dealer I am buying the unit from to put it in place and connect LP. The pictures show exactly what I needed to see.
Thanks,
Phil Tucker

Bingo, your pictures (or links to) aren't showing up. Can you repost them? I am interested in how you might have insulated against sound from the generator.

We have an Onan "Microquiet" that is NOT quiet and I absolutely hate running it as it could wake the dead.

Thanks.

Bingo's picture have always (and continue to) shown up just fine. I think you need to check on your end Margee.
