Cetane Booster

Well,

I'm re-visiting my cetane question of just about a year ago. I did a "search" and didn't see anything new. Last year I drove a 2010 F350 6.4 diesel dually and I noticed it showed appreciable milage improvement with the cetane booster, as others have noted.

Now, I drive a 2011 GMC 3500 dually with the Duramax diesel. My question for you GM guys is . . do the Chevy/GMC's show any improvement with a cetane booster?

Logic would dictate that it should help, Ford,Chevy,Cummins,Detroit, whatever, the same physics apply - if Ford says (and it does) that their diesels need at least 45 cetane when most pumps I've encountered say 40 cetane then I'd think that all would benefit from the booster.

Any real-world experience out there?

Jerry

I run the Power Service in my 6.4L and have not notice any improvement in fuel economy or performance. I am only running it now as it contains the anti-gel solution to keep my fuel from freezing up in the -20 degree cold snaps we are experiencing.

It seemed to help in my previous 2005 Duramax, but don't have enough mileage on the 2011 to know yet. Plus with the switch to the Winter blend it tends to decrease the mileage anyway, so I probably won't really know till I start towing again in the spring. I'm still on the fence as to if it helps enough to offset the cost. As to the ratings on the Pumps, if they are like around here that's a minimum rating that they seem to put on all Diesel pumps, Reg or Prem alike. Don't think I've ever seen anything other than 40 min

gpats, do you think the "slight" improvement is enough to offset the cost (as others have noted)?

Winter - I use the Power Service white bottle to keep Fuel from gelling and easier starting (never have to use the block heater) other times I use the Power Service gray bottle about once a month to keep injectors clean. I have not noticed a MPG increase but that could be because of the ULSD fuel.

We do note a difference in performance If we do not use it.

We use the cetane boost ( 4 to 6 numbers) and do not notice any real difference; then again I do not have a DPF so performance has been exceptional since making the change. Cetane is an insurance as Diesel fuel can vary pending what refinery it comes from and the demand on volume to get diesel out to the markets.

In my 05 I don't see any improvement but use Schaeffer every tank for increased lubricity protection.

This is what they say Schaeffer can do?
Product Benefits
• Mileage Improvement
• Horsepower Improvement
• Cetane Improvement
• Emission Reduction
• Cleans Injectors
• Inhibits Corrosion
• Controls Moisture
• De-Icer
• Lowers Cold Filter Plugging Point
I buy it by the case run around $.60 a tank, cheap piece of mind.

Jerry, the GM dealer I have used fairly consistently indicated to me at the outset of purchase that no booster was needed. I have read other forums and some indicate they may help with injectors but no real noticeable mpg improvements.

The only GM approved additive is Stanadyne.

I add 2 stroke oil to my diesel fuel. It's the one in the blue jug at Wal Mart. I add about 2 oz per gallon. I notice about a 3 mpg improvement. I told a friend and he also gets 3 mpg better. But we both have old (1996 and 1997) 12V Dodge Cummins trucks. I do not know how it would work in other brands of trucks especially with emissions.

Our fire dept. Mechanic mandates it's use in every tankful of fuel in all our fire trucks. I take his advise and use it in mine. He is looking to add lubrication. The biggest noticeable difference is a reduction in black soot. Twice even though I have had this in my tank when the temp got down to -20 my truck would not run.

I agree, I use Schaeffer's with every tank. Don't' know if it increases MPG but like to think it improves diesel quallity.

i think, just my opinion, that these additives can effect some of he senors in the engine .could get very expensive .if one does not notice a diffence in fuel mileage, then you,re just adding more cost to the expense of running your truck.just my opinion!!!

I agree with Thor, I bought a case of cetane booster from Ford and still trying to use it up. On my 05 F350 I didn't notice any improvement. Not to say none occurred, I just didn't notice any so why spend extra. Seems that most additives are usually additives to cost and not performance. I do like anti gel though especially if I travel out of the area and get to warm spots that don't have winterized diesel and return home to sub freezing temps.
