Dometic A/C Fan Motor Replacement

The bedroom a/c started making a noticeable loud noise, first thing at 6:30 in the morning up on the roof before it got to hot, fortunately we are at 'Jackson Rancheria Casino RV park' in California. After inspection I found the fan shaft motor bearings are going out after 11 months fulltime on the road with heavy usage, but what I also found was a lot of saw dust which I have also found in the LED light covers. It's not rocket science to clean up after any kind of installation. After cleaning both units, it was like pulling teeth trying to find a replacement motor in less than 2 weeks out of delivery. AAA RV gave me the phone number to an outfit in Oregon 'Laurell Hurst', they had 4 in stock at $235,00 a piece with 2 day shipping. I will replace the fan motor myself, replace the bearings in the old one and use it as a backup. Although we had to extend our stay here at the casino, I don't think Lisa is disappointed with that, LOL.

Which failed, the blower fan or condenser fan? Just curious.

The motor is a double shaft motor it drives both the condenser and evaporator fans. The condenser side is the bearing that is going out.

Thanks. Had mine off the roof yesterday to try to figure out why the bedroom unit was freezing up on auto mode. I found they had mounted the AC unit to far forward on the roof cut outs. There was about a 3/4" open slot for the cold air to go back into the return area because the foam separating the cold air from the return was not sealing between the two holes. Rather than move the AC unit, I move the foam so it would seal. It will be a while before I know if this solved the problem.

I also used my portable air compressor to clean both coils so as to not make a big mess and have to wash the rig. When I install the new motor and do the yearly recommended cleaning I will use quick dry coil cleaner, kind of like brake clean but not as corrosive.

When my fan motor bearings started to go out and the replacement was many days away, i used a small drill bit 1/16" and drilled a small hole in each bearing cap and that allowed me to oil the motor bearings to get me through until the new motor arrived. It is a last ditch effort and requires trips to the roof but its better than listening to the noise or having no air.

Be careful with spray coil cleaner. Some will eat styrofoam! Ask me how I know
