Is workamping taxable?
Our neighbor at Ridgecrest RV park in Leesburg, FL just said that he had to fill out tax forms when he started workamping this winter. He doesn't get paid, just a free site and utilities. He believes he will have to pay federal income tax on the value of his freebies. Is this the new wave of the future?

This is nothing new, taxes are due. However, if the park doesn't report it (they are supposed to but many don't) then the IRS doesn't know about it.

If your presence in the park is a condition of your employment it is not taxable.

Yes it really depends on what you are doing for the park. That's why we only work for government entities. That way we don't get a 1099 and we don't have to mess with it.

My neighbor says that he responded to a workamping request from Workamper News. This is a for profit campground/winter resort with a combination of permanent dwellings and RV's. He does general grounds work and some minor maintenance. He contracted to work 5 months. In return he gets a free spot, propane and utilities. He receives no pay for his work. He says he's been doing this for five years, although not at this place, and this is the first time he had to fill out tax forms.

Many private parks do this - not because they necessarily want to, but because the IRS deems it as barter (site for work) and bartering is considered taxable income. One thing to do in this situation is complete a new W-4 and have more than necessary taken out for federal taxes - that way your friend will either need to pay less in 2013 or get more back - since it's not really coming out of any pay. One more thing - now your friend has to file state taxes if he is working in a state with state income tax.

We thought about taking the plunge but am really confused. What I got so far is 1. Yes you need to claim it on your Fed. taxes. 2. If you are in a state that has state income tax you also claim. 3. If you work for the govt. or govt entity you don't pay any tax. Sounds about right.

Pineranch... for number 1., it should read, "Yes you need to claim it on your Fed. taxes if you get a 1099".

You're going to find that more and more you're going to have to file; but only if you are issued a W-2 or 1099. That's the only way the IRS has of knowing you were paid. If you don't receive either of these forms then the employer didn't report it.

We are getting closer and closer to that simplified tax form:
1. How much did you make?
2. Send it in.

Yes, the taxes should be:
1. How much did you make?
2. Send in half!

pineranch, it isn't quite that simple. if you get a 1099 then you will have to look at filing taxes. if you are going to work discuss it with the workampering site to see if they do 1099s.
remember some workampers get paid wages as well as the site and other benefits. and, federal and state taxes MAY come into play.
when in doubt see a tax preparer who knows the rules.

We always pay taxes on the wage earned if you are recieving $ per hour or salary for work preformed. If you are only getting space for exchange there should be no taxes due. We have been workamping for 5 years now. Hope this helps. Usually where we work we get site for free and pay for all hours worked. YES there alot of those jobs out there.
