Tire Life?
Hi
I had a Class A owner tell me yesterday that he had gone to a tire store to get a tire replaced because of a sidewall injury. The tire store citing a new DOT regulation refused to work on the rig because the tires were older than 6 years.
Has anyone else run into this?

I have a friend who took his car to Costco to have his tires rotated and they refused. Said the tires were too old, so he bought a new set of tires while there.

Hi
What I am trying to find out is what rule, regulation or law requires this or is just a sales pitch.
I have looked and can’t find anything except the manufactures all recommend a tire life in years for various models of tires.
A recommendation is not a requirement in this country for the time being anyway.

As far as I can tell there is no law out there in the US although there are some regulations in other countries. There are groups out there fighting to get a law past and this is from one of their websites So far, more than 100 deaths have been attributed to old tires, and there is currently a lawsuit against Bridgestone/Firestone for selling old tires as new. It’s alleged that these tires were responsible for a crash which left one man dead and a family without a father.)
My guess would be places unwilling to work on old tires are following their lawyers and their sales managers combined advice. "Don't open yourself up to being sued and sell as many tires as you can"

Heard the same thing from a national tire company last weekend when trying to have my Grandmothers tires rotated. She only drives 2k - 3k miles a year and her car barely has 26k miles on it for being a 2000 model year. The national chain said being she had the original tires on the car, they could not do any work other than install new tires based upon the tires being 14 years old. I went ahead and had brand new Michelin's installed to cure any issues going forward for her. The chain quoted it was part of some new DOT law that was passed during the past legislation session. Nuts!

Age is now becoming a very serious issue. I have a 1985 Cadillac Convertible, I purchased new when I was 25. In the last 20 years the car has traveled only 3000 miles. It's has had four sets of Vogue Tires in that time. When I have the "Wire /Rims" tuned, the wheel tuning company, requires the tires be less that 5 years old, or they refused to remount them. I keep weight off them and they are covered and garaged. It's the breakdown of the materials. I usually put them on Craisglist and someone buys them. I have a release they sign. It's kind of sad, tires look new, but tis a fact they can fail.

The real sad part is Goodyear has demonstrated that new tires can fail!!!

The states have different rules. We had a nail in one of our tow car tires and Wal Mart would not fix it because the tire did not have enough tread on it...according to the state law.
