I 95 closure 70 miles in South Carolina

COLUMBIA, SC (WCSC) -

The South Carolina Department of Transportation closed a 70-mile section of I-95 between the I-20 and I-26 interchanges Sunday.

The decision to close the portion of I-95 was made after a number of flooded sections of the interstate required several detours, according to SCDOT spokesman Robert Kudelka.

The alternate route is I-20 Florence to I-77 around Columbia, then onto I-26 east for motorists to return to I-95. Northbound travelers would reverse this route.

Traveler information is available on the SCDOT website: www.scdot.org.

We are watching this closely as we will be traveling this direction on Sunday. I thought about I-81 to I-77. I would hope everyone has left the track at Charlotte as it is the day after the race. We will see. Hopefully it will re-open before then.

Thanks for the information. I also use the 511 website and when I'm in the state I call 511 for road information too, has been helpful at times.

We are leaving from Maine tomorrow to go to Florida. I too was thinking of I-81 to I-77 to I-20 west and get over that way to Augusta, Ga., then head south.

If that doesn't work was thinking of heading towards Atlanta and pick up I-75 to I-10. We are heading to Mayport, Fl. This will add a few more hours and mileage, but we will eventually get there.

Here is a link for the 511, safe travels to all.

kdeiss, thanks for posting this info, we will be going that way tomorrow morning.

Great to hear that we don't have to go out of our way to get there.

Thanks again,
Marge

We just arrived in Walterboro, SC, we took I-81, I-77, I-26, to I-95 south. We had no problems. Lots of construction on I-26, so I'm sure it will be slow going during the week around those areas. As you can see we drove on Sunday.

Have a safe trip down.
