Wood turned pens
Just curious is there anyone out there that is into turning pens?
I want to turn while camping and wonder does any one have any advice.
If so, Do camp ground hoist have any issues? Is there any rules saying yes or no?
Thanks
Merry Christmas

David,
I am interested in pen turning as well as other turnings. Can't answer the question about parks though. People do other hobbies in parks and I don't see why most parks would have a problem with it as long as quiet hours were observed and one cleaned up.

Had a guy come in our park back in November that had a enclosed trailer behind his MH with a wood shop including a Shop Smith.

Maybe I should have been a little more clear.Pen (a writing instrument) turning is a art form that is created on a wood lathe.
Pens can be turned from about any type of material. Wood from all over the world is used for pen turning.also corian, granite, acrylic, deer antler, even weeds, yes weeds like scotch broom.
There are many talented and skillful artisans who create wonderful, handmade,one-of-a-kind fine writing instruments.
I would love to connect with some MOC folks who would be willing to send me diff woods from diff parts of the country.
ever year I am involved with folks around the country who turn pens for our military troops over seas, this year it is for troops in Afghanistan.
I hope this helps
Merry Christmas

I have a neighbor here next to our church that does just what you are asking about. He also uses pieces of old bowling balls and has some very nice elegant looking pens. It sound like a hobby/project that would be fun to be involved in.

David - I have turned some here at the stick house...never thought about turning on the road. I have a full size lathe in my basement, similar in size to the Shop Smith mentioned above. I can't even imagine bringing either on the road, in any type of trailer. Check out the wood craft suppliers on-line. There are mini-lathes on the market and I can't think of any reason why you couldn't use one of them in any campground as long as you clean up the wood shavings (good fire starter). This activity would not make a lot of noise and you might make a few bucks along the way. Good luck with this adventure and let us know how things "turn" out! (Oops, that just kind of happened!)
