New Ford Super Duty Purchase
Ordering a new Ford Super Duty diesel 6 3/4 bed SRW next week and I am struggling with the decision between the 250 or the 350. Our plans also include the purchase of a new 5th wheel as well. The size of the 5th wheel will be approximately 28 - 32ft, 8,000 - 10,000 lbs with a pin weight of 1200 - 1800 lbs.
I would welcome members input regarding the following items between the 250 / 350.
Would I be better off with the 350 for the additional payload capacity? I would like to maintain a level ride without the use of air bags etc.
Will ride quality suffer with the 350 when not pulling the 5th wheel? Everyone tells me the ride is noticeably rougher with the 350? Have test driven both and can't tell much of a difference however test drives are limited in distance and terrain. Would welcome input from those with experience.
Would also like input on hitch as well, will I most likely need a slider and if so what are your recommendations?
Thanks to all for your help!!

350. You would not have to worry about payload which goes fast. My 2011 f350 rides a LOT better then 2008 f250

IIRC.. EVERYTHING is the same between the two except the springs in the rear. I wish I had the 350 because I now have to get airbags.

350 - Dually. Capability and safety margin are everything.
Slider hitch - Pullrite Superglide. No jumping out to pull levers or worse yet, forgetting to pull the levers and crunching your rig and/or tow vehicle. Again, capacity and safety margin are everything plus if you ever decide to get a heavier rig someday, you'll already have the equipment to safely and comfortably haul it.
Were I to buy my truck all over again, I'd have gone with a 350 Dually even though the engine is the same. JMHO of course.

With an 8000 to 10000 pound fiver with 1200 to 1800 pin either will work just fine for you. If you ever get a BIG Montana you won't have enough truck. Check the payload capacity of each truck to see what you really need.

350 SRW. You don't need a DRW for those weights unless you are thinking you may go a lot heavier in the future.

350...for pin weight, plan on 20% of the RV's GVWR.

Agree with richfaa on the DRW. I've had 2 F350 SRW's and now have a DRW, they do make a difference in towing. That said they are a PIA as a daily driver. IMO.

I've towed with both F250 and F350, I would most certainly buy the F350. When we had the F250 we had a trailer within the size/weight for the F250 meeting all specs required, but things change. Please let us know what you pick.

350 for certain. You'll love not having to worry as much about what you're weights are. The mileage is just about exactly the same (if the same weight). They are a little taller, but not hard to get used to.

I bought the F350 SRW and a manual Reese slider hitch. I have never had to slide the hitch back so I am glad I didn't purchase anything automatic or more expensive. Even though I have never had to use the slider I feel better knowing I have it if needed. The F350 was more than enough for our first fiver with room to spare. But then we traded and got a new fiver and now are right at the weight limit. If you think someday you will need a dually for a heavier trailer then you should probably start with a dually now. I just know that in some areas we have visited it is not that easy to maneuver or park a SRW 1-ton truck let alone a dually when you are sight seeing or running errands.

I bought a 2015 F350 dully 8 ft. bed in August and love it. The ride is great compared to my 2001 F350 dully it rides like a Lincoln. They beefed up the 350 frame and transmission this year for better tow weight and incresased the brake size , bigger turbo and new fuel injector system with improved high pressure pump. They increased the HP and torque and they call it the second generation 6.7.

Can you still get a 350 in short bed? Maybe I missed by reading too fast?

Yes you can still get a F350 SRW in s short bed 6'9" bed or an 8' bed. I believe the DRW models only come in the long bed.
