Master Certified Techs
The Young's epic adventure with getting their RV looked at mentioned a subject that makes me chuckle every time ... Master Certified Techs. Ah yes ... you stand close to the service center at your RV dealer and look up at the wall where several wooden framed certifications with an 8 X 10 color glossy are in full view. Countless credentials of accomplished training and sometimes years of loyal service to the dealer is conveyed in fancy scrolled lettering. I too was impressed and was at ease once with a Master Certified Tech while my entry door was replaced due to sprung hinges. It was a nightmare ... using no backup material while using a crowbar, he pried the door with lots of sealer as applied at the factory away from the outer wall. He did get the door back on and working albeit a few stripped screws, but with 2-3 dozen tick marks in my high gloss finish all the way around the door. It was pretty pricey for my dealer to have the body work done to get it back to where I would hook up and bring it home. I know for a fact that many certifications at RV dealerships require no hands on showings of skill or written tests ... just that you were rostered and were a warm body during the presentation. It's the same at my place of work now days ... there are over 900 of us in maintenance and many times (not always) as long as we are rostered at a given class and are still breathing when it's over ... we're certified. We just don't get the plaques and 8 X 10 color glossys.

All too true and this applies to all to many professions across all too many industries. It used to be certifications gave you some idea of who you could trust, today not so much.

This kind of stuff has been going on in just about any profession. Someone having a piece of paper or plaque (or even a diploma in lots of instances!) on the wall means nothing any more. Kind of depressing.

In this case assuredly all deserved I am sure (NOT)
I owned a equipment rental business for 30 years, applicants for mechanics positions all seemed to have tons of credentials, but when you put them in the shop to work on a myriad of different equipment they proved to be nothing more than parts changers, they were unable to diagnose problems and in many cases parts that could be repaired for much less than replacement could not be done because they did not know how to do that.
That works at RV and Automobile dealerships where you are charging it out to a unsuspecting customer but when you are paying the bills and repairing your own equipment it is not sustainable. Always looked for older fella's with NO credentials other than years of experience, they always proved to be the best.
Now I am going to get on the internet and get myself some doctorate degree in something or other so I can hang it on the wall with my deer heads, wish I had mounted the North end of the deer going South, it would have been more appropriate.

Sad.
On the bright side, try obtaining computer certifications like CISSP,CCNA, MCSE or Security +. They take a lot of effort to get and maintain. They also require annual continuing education (CE).
I can't personally speak to the OPs post regarding "Master Certified Techs" but somehow I find it believable.

I was a trained & certified CNC machinist/programmer. Trust me, I wasn't just a green button pusher. To be fair, there are production only button pushers but calling them a machinist is beyond a stretch of the term.

Yes Buddy I've been a real machinist for over 50 years. I design my products, program the machines, assemble the parts to make the products then take phone orders then take them to the post office. I can still run a manual machine, just don't like too any more. CNC gives you the ability to make what you won't in place of what the machine can make.

Certified Techs, usually are knowledgeable, but, if the management is not on top of them, requiring then to do what is right, it means nothing. The following links are what techs use to get those plaques on the wall.
My techs had to be tested and certified in their skill area or they did not work at my Dealership. They had to pass a drug test, a credit check, a previous employer that WOULD rehire them, and either a tech school or years of experience to be considered for employment.

However, I want to disclose something that happened at my local Wmart. Took our Camry in for a rotate and balance, the hub caps had holes you could see the lug nuts, but the holes were too small to get a socket thru. The "tech" tried to get the socket thru the hole, got a smaller socket, got it thru the hole, but was too small for the lug nut. I am standing, looking over the fence watching this idiot trying to remove my tires. I call the manager over and ask him to watch his "tech". After a few minutes, he goes over and tells him to remove the hubcap. Just so happens, there is a Regional Manager from W/M there. I get to talk with him. Being retired from the car business, I tell him what I think. They get a different "tech" who actually knows what he is doing and finishes the job.
The "tech" that did not know you have to remove the hub cap, had a "plaque" in the waiting room stating he was a "certified tire tech" trained by W/M.
So, you can take the 'plaques" at face value, that means they showed up at work when the camera guy was there.

Good post, I always chuckle when you come on here, on target as usual. Good on you for making them fix the dings and pock marks. It is terribly hard to find anyone that wants to learn and be good at a job anymore. I imagine our fathers and grandfathers said the same thing, but we can see it and live it now. In the summer, there are so many ads looking for HVAC Tecs, all of the companies are always short handed. I have a pal that is looking for a mechanic for his auto repair shop, he hasn't had any luck, but I look in Craigs list and there are 20 or so that say they are looking, probably want enough jobs to get fishing ...or drug money and that will round out their week. I have found 2 guys that were willing to put up with my rules and show up every day, both are making over a hunnert a year now with their own companies, they do good work, but hard workers are good to find...
Glad your rig was taken care of. Finally.

It reminds me of when garbage men became "Sanitation Engineers" and sales clerks became "Sales Associates". I myself am becoming a "RV Inhabitant Specialist First Class".

How about airline pilots that can’t fly an airplane!

Unfortunately they crash like the Airbus out of Brazil, the crash in California and the latest one Air Asia. All of them because the crew had been trained to fly a “Vide3o Game” not an aircraft.
