surge protector

If the pedistal has lost the ground will the surge protector still stop a surge of electric voltage???? It portable surge protector... 50 amp..

It will stop a surge but the pedestal needs to be repaired or you need to get off it. Having a grounded system is very important.

I would expect the ground is needed to provide a path to ground for a 'surge', more likely this could be caused by lightning. There should be devices inside the protective device that shunt a high voltage surge to ground. That is the value given in joules, the higher the number, the larger a surge the device can handle. Don't be lulled into thinking the neutral will provide that path, it must be the ground.

If the protector is working properly it should shut down power to the rig if it detects either an open ground or neutral.
