Memory Foam Toppers - Utter Confusion

Fellow MOCers:
I have spent the last three hours researching the myriad of choices of memory foam toppers. This was after going to Tuesday Morning as was mentioned on another thread to hopefully get one for $69.00 as advertised. They were sold out and after doing all of this research I am thankful. Research has shown many brands as well as many densities available. Densities range from 3 lbs/ft to 6 lbs/ft and are prices accordingly. This has led me to believe that the Tuesday Morning one was probably a 3# model which may be fine for some. I think myself and DW have decided that we are going to settle for the good old Wallyworld offering. They have a 4" pad that is 1.5" of memory foam and 2.5" of high-density pu (I take this to be polyurethane). The reviews were mixed on the Wal-mart site but seemed to be favorable. They had a rollback (YAYYYY) on the price to $144. We will be purchasing it before Thanksgiving and will have an eight night trial then. I will definitely post my opinion of the purchase when we return. Between my herniated disc and DW's chronic back pain from an auto accident, I think we are well-qualified to judge the merits of the hopeful comfort the pad will provide.
Bingo
On edit: Can't believe I typed all that and did not mention that the price listed is for King size which we have.

Try this website http://www.sleepwarehouse.com/index....ATS&Category=2. We got ours here a little over a year ago, but I can't remember which product as I can see they have added some choices. Shipping is free. The only one at Wally World that I can comment on is their 2" memory foam topper ... IMHO not worth dragging up to the checkout stand. No density to it.

I just bought one from Sam's Club yesterday for our Queen bed in the Montana and it was right around $130.00, but it's a three inch memory foam. I slept on the exact same one in my sisters Montana and it was great. I have a whole bunch of back problems. So you might want to check out Sam's Club.

Also am using the 3" queen memory foam pad from Sam's. We scored a special last year and paid ~ $99.00 for ours not sure of the density - but the sucker was very heavy to pack out! I second the idea of using the denser pads - the light weight memory foam is not worth messing with. We have since installed a king unit at the home base.

Picked one up at Sam's before last trip. Was a three inch thick, King size $150.00, well worth the cost.

Is this being used in conjunction with your mattress or is it replacing the mattress. I have been thinking of junking our "mattress" and going this route.

Mike, you can get more use from an old mattress with the topper. We have a pillow top we paid tons for, it had two ruts in it we couldn't roll over, so I turned the matterss over and bought a $150.00 topper from Target, the bed is like new now.

On top of the OEM brick that came in the Montana. We are currently getting by with a 2" topper which is a definite improvement, but it is a queen size left over from the TT days (We have it turned sideways on the king so we are about a foot short of covering the king mattress). We are getting a king size to match the bed and relegate the 2" to the sofa bed for the girls. The 2" we have came from Camping World and has performed admirably for three years. From what I researched, it is recommended that any memory pad or mattress have stable support underneath. I would definitely consider the mattress that came in the Montana to be stable support!! Definitely agree with Ozz on this one!!

As I mentioned in an earlier thread, I purchased a tempur-pedic mattress topper from Tuesday Morning in August 2006 for $39.95. I checked the spec sheet that is attached to it and it is definitely a 4"er and the density is 5.3 lbs with a 5 year warranty. Upon checking the Tempur-pedic web site it seems that they no longer make a 4" only a 3" and I could not find a density rating for it. On the Tuesday Morning thing as I stated on the earlier thread they sell close outs only and when the supply is gone its gone. They have some incredible deals if you are fortunate enough to be there at the right time. I signed up to receive the mailer and if you can't do that, everything (read new items) go on sale the first Tuesday morning of every month. I also believe (I could be wrong on this) that the Tuesday Morning stores are concentrated in the north east and there are 4 or 5 in the Pittsburgh Pa. area which is were I used to live for 52 years.

Phil,

We also got our King size memory foam from Costco. Did your foam every fully expand from it's compressed packaging?

Karl, we put ours on the floor up stairs for about a week until the smell went away. During that week it did fully expand.

Walter,
Your post is encouraging and once again is leading me back to my state of UTTER CONFUSION (DW says this is my normal state anyway....LOL)!!! I guess I will wait until the first Tuesday of October and November to see if we can get lucky with a new listing on the Tuesday Morning ad. If we don't like it then it looks like either Wal-Mart, Costco, or Overstock. Thank goodness we have until the middle of November to decide.

Bingo, one word of caution on the thicker pads... Ours was a 4" king size from Overstock.com. Quite heavy. They tear VERY easily. We knew this ahead of time and still managed to tear a 12" gash in it just from trying to slide it across the bed a little. No problem - just push it back together in it's final position, but you do need to be careful with them.

I will tell you that it is worth it. Best sleep I have ever had in my 55 years.

Also - you definitely need a good cotton mattress pad over top of any foam. Heat build up is a problem without it.

We have the "weighs a ton", 3" Thermopedic topper. The king was too big for the bed from side to side and hung over on the rounded corners. I unzipped the cover and used an electric carving knife to shape it to fit. Stuff cuts great with that tool and now fits perfectly. We sleep soundly and awaken rested.

Karl, after about 2 days in the front room it finally expanded about 99%. One spo on the edge took a little longer, but we used it anyway.........

We decided on a dense 4" topper from Overstock.com. It was for a kingsize bed in our 3295RK and what a difference it makes. I would seriously consider a 4" thickness. It cost about $170. and shipping was free.
